My boyfriend has always had beagles for rabbit hunting. At first I was a little concerned about the sport but he eats rabbit and we sell the pelts (he also traps on our property). Anyway I've learned to like the sport, not for the end result so much as going out in the woods with the dogs and seeing what they were bred to do. Those goofy dogs are down right professionals when it comes to finding a rabbit trail. Anyway we had Molly who was 10 years old and has had 4 litters of puppies before we got her, Molly was the biggest baby she was the biggest cuddler and ruled the roost. Sassy came from another breeder and I don't think she was socialized as well as a pup, she would cower when you go to pet her. Two weeks ago I went to feed the dogs in the morning and Molly didn't come out of the doghouse, I opened the top of the doghouse and saw how sick she was, she was cold and couldn't even raise her head, I carried her into the house and tried to feed her some cooked hamburger and some baby asprin, but she wouldn't eat. She died that day. Of course since Sassy had been with her for 4 years and never by herself she was miserable she dug out of their pen and I found her wandering around. We brought her inside and she wouldn't eat, I thought she was just lonely. I let her out that night and saw that she couldn't pee. So we called the vet and made an appointment the next day. They thought she just had a stone and then they scoped her and thought she had a mass in her uterus, she was supposed to be bred this spring. They did surgery on her and found a cyst on her uterus that connected to her abdominal wall and bladder. They drained the cyst, spayed her and sent her home the next day. I guess that if Molly had not died we might never have known that Sassy was sick and we could have lost her as well. Thankfully Sas is coming along, she still won't stay in her pen, but she follows me around the house in the barn, she still doesn't like to be pet but she will sit right tight to me on the couch and growl at the dogs and the cats if they try to get near me. Its driving my dog Annie nuts. I guess we'll have to get sassy another beagle friend so she can live happily in her pen again.

Sarah, what a bittersweet story. Sorry you lost Molly but that saved Sassy. We had a Jack Russel named Sassy---and she was. Hope Sas keeps coming along ok and learns to like the other dogs. MB

Oh Sarah, I'm sooo sorry for the loss of Molly -- but glad that your Sassy is going to be ok. I too lost a dog that was BEST friends with another, and he greived for her something terrible. I also have a big Livestock Guardian dog who was raising his OWN little lamb (mama didn't want her), and when we lost her to bloat, he LITTERALLY cried for two solid weeks. It was just HEARTBREAKING!!!

It's sad that so many people don't realize (or don't want to BELIEVE) that animals have emotions TOO. All they have to do is take a look at your Sassy to know the truth. Sending **BIG HUGS** to you both ~~Tracy

How sad. But I am glad you found out what was wrong with Sassy. She seems like a neat dog. She will probably need another Beagle friend.

I worry about my 2 Rat Terriers. They are sisters and almost 12 years old in July. They are starting to look their age. And becoming a little slower. I worry about one of them dying and leaving the other. How will she make it? I will deal with that when the time comes. I keep waiting, but they are still going strong.

That is so sad to have lost Molly. I am glad that Sassy is going to be okay, though. *hugs*

I am so sorry for your loss. This is a very fragile stage for Sassy being that it sounds like she lost the pack leader. Take it for what it's worth but this is my advice. Take the lead and don't show you are mourning (only to her). When a human is sad it is "showing weakness" to a dog and you don't want an insecure nervous dog taking the reins so to speak. Give her something to do like extra training or extra fetch time. This will turn her focus around and show her life goes on and that you are taking control. That will help with her insecurities as well. Also when she growls at your other animals tell her NO! She is trying to posses you and this can cause fights until corrected. I really am sorry for your loss and hope things look up for you soon. Hugs
