My mother-in-law has an old Free-Westinghouse sewing machine. She is trying to find needles for it, and not having alot of luck. Anyone know of a source?

I've had good luck finding oddball vintage things from a seller on Ebay "stitches in Time". http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Stitches-in-Time__W0QQ_armrsZ1
You'll probably need to email her through her ebay store, but you can ask if she knows if a certain size is still available, and whether she sells them.

Hi Michelle,
Is it a VS machine or a rotary? Does it have a long skinny bobbin or a round modern one? If it is a VS with a long bobbin it will probably use a standard 15x1 Singer needle. Let me know if it is a rotary with a round bobbin and I'll see if I have a needle or two to spare. Thr rotary machines use a different size.

Judith, okay, what is a VS machine or a rotary? I will have to ask my husband what the needle measurement was again. 1 and 3/64's or something really odd. It is shorter then an average needle.
Thanks for the help and encouragement.
I will look up the ebay seller. We were on ebay the other day looking.

Michelle,
VS stands for vertical shuttle. The shuttle is a bullet-shaped thing the long bobbin fits into on the underside of the machine. A rotary machine has a round bobbin that will fit into a bobbin case that is then put into the machine. Sometimes the bobbin case is separate and sometimes it is part of the machine. If the needle you need is shorter than the current standard needles (15x1) it is probably a rotary machine. I checked my needle stash and I do have some spares of that size (Singer 206x13, Schmetz 21:32, or Boye 2 1/2). Email me your address and I'll be happy to send you a couple. I love to see these great old machines put back to work again.
