This is **SO** fantastic! First Lady Obama is planting a vegetable garden on the White House Lawn - with bee hives (!), composting, heirlooms, rare herbs, starting from seed, and school children.
First White House garden since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden during WWII.
How cool is that?

She must have been watching the news and can sence how bad things are going to be. I am so dissapointed in our new president that I cannot see past it. She shows a whole lot more common sense than anyone else in Washington D.C. |

I saw this news article too! What a great idea! I'm looking forward to hearing more about it as the garden progresses.

Yay! I think that is so cool! It's about time they put some of that land to good use around the house! If Michelle is actually gonna do any of the work herself I will be so excited! |

Maybe, she then will appreciate the danger of the legislation being proposed to curtail organic farming? perhaps she could be asked to speak against the FSA idea.

This is great! I think she's setting an example for everyone. Now my neighbors won't think I'm weird for building a salad table--hmm, maybe they'll even want to try it themselves...I hope this catches on! Cindy |

This wonderful idea of reviving the Victory Garden was the idea of the founder of KGI, Kitchen Gardeners International - a great website - I think it is a wonderful idea and we all need to jump on the bandwagon here and start growing our own foods again! The Summer issue of Herb Quarterly magazine will feature my article on the Victory Garden Revival - I hope you will all enjoy it! Kathy of the Enchanted Wood

Garden first and maybe sheep next. It would be great to see sheep eating and keeping the lawn "mowed" as they did way back in Jefferson's time. I can't wait to see how her garden grows.

This is so cool! Thank you First Lady Obama! I just wish every household in America could plant a pot of tomatoes or a window box of lettuce. Once you do...it's over, you'll be hooked on the fresh, yummy homegrown food and then you end up planting more...and more...and more. I want to start giving tomato plants to my neighbors as gifts to get them going. |

This was the first article I read today and my husband urged me to get on the forum and start a conversation and look it is already here! Dang you Farm Chicks are COOL! We think this is such great news becuase of that Bill 875 that wants to further corporatize and industrialize farming. Go Obamas! Why would it take the chef 10 years to get here "local" garden? oh right, it was meat and potatos for the last decade! Being that we are small time farmers we hope the Obamas don't leave us out; I heard there was section of the stimulus money going towards fresh food for schools program. Wouldn't that be great?!

>> Makes me glad that I choose to grow a good amount of our groceries.. <<
This summer will be fine, I think, for those who garden on a regular basis. With the President & Family growing their veges, now it won't seem so odd that somebody like me is out grubbing in the garden an' making sure everything is in good shape.
And I'm considering buying a new shovel...Ha!
My Sunday school teacher some years ago used to make ugly remarks about me working in my vege beds...guess it's not so "Bad" after all! LOL!

The First Fam's garden was in the New York Times again today!
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/22/business/22food.html?em
The article's much broader than that - entiteled "Is A Food Revoltion Now In Season?"
Good read.

I feel inspired to help create a community garden where everything grown goes directly to the food bank (Truely FarmChick Terra's idea).
We have a huge "gang problem" here and I am hoping my local FarmChicks wanna get some "gang kids" suggested to us from the school, to come build a fantastic garden with us. Maybe they could get school credit?. . .
Once it starts I will be sure to document it and post it.
Thanks Ms. Obama for being a mom who knows the benefits from fresh food.
