I am planting a berry patch. I heard that you should not plant black berries and raspberries together. Then when My plants arrived, the planting guide said to plant black and reap berries 300 feet apart to prevent disease. I called a neighbor that used to have a wonderful patch of black berries. I ask her what she thought. She said that she had never heard of that. However, she planted respberries on the other side of her garden (maybe 50') In a couple of years her blackberries had developed a disease and died. She even had the county extension guy look at them. But he didn't say or know that she had rasp berries. I planted my raspberries and now don't have a place to go with the black berries. Going 300' away means down by the road and a whole nother garden to water and weed. Any suggestions.??

Maybe a soil test should be done first, to make sure that there are no diseases lurking there. That may be a reason that something made the berries die back.

Other wise, I've never heard of seperating the different types of berries. It seems like the ones I had in S.C. did just fine planted pretty darn close to each other. They died back 'cause my kids and I neglected the poor things. But-- the blackberries did so blasted good, that just before we moved, my neighbor asked if he could take the berries for he an' his wife...I was completely confused, so I asked, "What are ya gonna do with 'em?" Ah! -- Gonna make some Hooch!!" ...

I'll look in my organic book an' see if there is anything that sez to seperate these types from one another..

Belle~

I think we are in a similar situation. I have blackberry bushes in my garden and have just ordered some raspberry bushes. The company I am getting mine from say 600 feet of space! So I will have to go on the opposite side of my house down by the road, too. Here is a link to the nursery I am using's guide to raspberries: https://indianaberry.com/info_rasp_tips.php . I have also read somewhere that you shouldn't plant certain raspberries and blackberries together because they will cross. Good luck!

Laurianne, Gee, never thought about looking in a book! I only have a half dozen Hort books. Anyway just did. Only found 2 books that tells anything about black and rasp berries. Neither one mentions seperating the 2. Both books says that berries are suseptable to disease and must be sprayed often. I have not read or heard that they will cross. Our county agent serves several counties and we don't get him until next Wed. Wonder how long my plants will stay healthy in a bucket of water?

I received my blue berry plants in the mail today. (Miller Nurseries) I read the planting guide. The guide is for everything from asparagas to Zucc. It tells how to plant raspberries and black berries but does not say anything about how far apart they should be planted. Not a word. Still have not planted my black berries. They are still in the bucket of water. I may just plant them in the garden where I had planned and then continue to research this issue. I could move them in the first month or so without any problem. Maybe??

I was just reading Square Foot Gardening and Carrots love Tomatoes last night and I did read about this. I will look it up and post what it said.

Ok, here you go: From Carrots Love Tomatoes:
Because of viral disease black and purple raspberries should be planted no closer than 600 feet from red varieties. Do not grow raspberries and blackberries near each other, either. Do not plant raspberries near potatoes, since they make the potatoes more susceptible to blight.

Who knew?

Oh,and Belle, they comment on having at least 2 varieties of blueberries also, which I think was being discussed here somewhere.
