Tomorrow is not only the first day of spring but also the Persian New Year. Iranians everywhere will be busy for the next 13 days celebrating the New Year and spring. I hope everyone has a wonderful day tomorrow. Here in IL the Nowrooz begins at 6:44 a.m.
I have just finished setting up my sofreh-ye haft-sinn, (ceremonial table). Tomorrow I will be busy cooking and baking for our holiday meal. This year I will be serving:
Mast-o-khiar(Yogurt & Cucumber Salad) Kuku-ye sabzi (Fresh Herb Kuku, egg casserole) Chelow ba polow paz, (Saffron Steamed Plain Basmati Rice) Khoresh-e bademjan, (Eggplant and beef stew) Nan-e-berrenji (Cardamom Rice Cookies) Baqlava, (Bakalava) Dugh (Yogurt and mint drink)
Since this is my third New Years as a farmgirl, I am attaching the link where I explained in detail about the Perian New Year.

Thanks for the Nowrooz wishes! It is a beautiful, chilly, sunny spring day here. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!
Gail, I'll get that recipe posted later. I need to make those cookies now!

All right Gail, here is the recipe for the cookies:
Cardamom Rice Cookies (Nan-e-berrenj)
For Syrup 1 1/2 cup of Sugar 1/2 cup of water 1/4 tablespoon Rose Water
For Batter 3 egg yolks (room temperature) 1 tablespoon sugar 1 cup clarified butter or ghee 1/2 cup corn oil 1 1/2 teaspoon of ground cardmom 3 cups rice flour 2 tablespoons of poppy seeds
1. Combine sugar and water in a small pan and bring to a boil, let simmer a few minutes. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in rose water. Let cool to room temperature.
2. Pre-heat oven to 350. In a warm bowl beat the egg yolks and 1 tablespoon of sugar until creamy.
3. For dough, mix in a large mixing bowl (I used my kitchen aid) the clarified butter, corn oil, cardamom and rice flour for a few minutes until well combined. Add in egg yolk mixture and mix for a few seconds, then pour in 3/4 cup of syrup and mix until well combined & not sticking to side of bowl.
4. Roll small pieces of dough into a ball, about the size of a hazelnut, and place on a parchment lined baking sheet about 2.5"s apart. Use the side of a fork and press lightly to make geometric designs on the cookie. You can use a cookie press if you have one for the design. Sprinkle the tops with poppy seeds and bake for 10-15 minutes. Let cookies cool completely before carefully removing from parchment paper. The cookies are very light and delicate, they crumble easily.
Enjoy with a cup of tea. Nush-e-jan! (Nourish the soul).

Dawn - thank you for the cookie recipe - I will make this weekend. I like trying new things and especially the use of cardamom and poppy seed.
