My daughter decided to order some Barred Rock chicks. I think the total was 12 or so. Something like 10 pullets and 2 roosters.
Anyway, she went to the P.O. and found the little fluffy bundles chirping around and was just non-plussed at what she found. She thought that they would be older, almost laying age! Y'know, with almost all their adult feathers grown in! (I'm not a chicken person so I don't know what age they 'should' have been but right beofre they look like a grown chicken).
My daughter was kind of put out but now she knows for next year! She gave a few away and kept most of them. Now she's having a pretty good time with them.
That is funny! I would be clueless about chickens too, I've been around farms a lot, but don't know the details. I hope your daughter gets loads of eggs soon!
OH, sad for your daughter. We for chicks this year too. I have had them for about 3 weeks and they are starting to get their "big girl feathers". I think it is usually 6 months before they start laying. One of the advantages of getting them young is they get use to you and arent so honory when they are older. I have buff orpingtons. If she wasnts older ones have her check places like craigs list for people selling layers.....I cant wait for the better weather mine are ready to go out side....
