I tried Mary Jane's directions on starting the Mother for Sour Dough Bread! My first batch was this past weekend - came out "okay", I wasn't too sure how it was going to come out because I did have quite a thick skin on top - the first week you have to just cover with a dry towel and the batter seemed awfully thick. The bread was good, but VERY chewy. So I just kept going with the mother....have a damp cloth on the bowl now with the plate on top - this morning and yesterday morning when I added my flour and water - MUCH better - the consistency seems right - looks like the picture when I let it fall from the spoon. I think this weekend's bread will be GREAT. I'll post an update...
I tried it for 3 weeks and the first batch was similar to yours. The second batch I used the cinnamon raisin recipe and it came out very good. My third batch must have died during the week because there were not any bubbles on top at all like it says there should be so I think I might have to start over.
huh....I wonder why it did that....well, it seemed the wet towel helped a lot in keeping the consistency better....I want to try the cinnamon raisin recipe next - but want to use cranberries instead of raisins - my husband is not crazy about raisins, so I usually sub it for dried cranberries. But I think this weekend I might just to the farm white bread again since the first batch didn't come out so good.
