I am in need of some good thoughts and prayers, ya'll.
I went to the doctor Monday about tenderness in the thyroid area on my neck that I just noticed Sat. They drew blood for tests and made an appt. for Wad. to get a scan. I went to that and it really hurt when she was doing the ultra sound on the right side. The doctor had the results that afternoon but I didn't get the message til later so had to wait til yesterday to talk to the doctor.
She said all the blood tests were fine (except cholesterol was 300. Ugh!) The thyroid was fine, too. Except for the growth on the right side. So I was supposed to have more blood drawn for more tests today, but the nurse couldn't find my very hard to find veins. So I need to drink lots of water and go back in the morning to try again.
The doctor said it will have to be removed. Like in surgery. Well, I have not been in a hospital in 28 years. I am scared to death. She did mention it could possibly be cancerous. I have no idea what is going to happen. I will need to be referred to a surgeon, I guess, and get this done. And I sure hope it's just outpatient, too, cuz I am not staying. Just knock me out and do it, then send me on home.
So please just say a little prayer for the big chicken woman here in Ga. I sure would appreciate it. I will let ya'll know as I find out more. Thanks so much for being here.
Kris

Kristin, You know I will be praying for you. God is in control of this too! Won't it be nice when we get to heaven and He says, "see I had it all under control the whole time, you never needed to worry." Until then, my dear friend, I am here praying you through! BIG HUGS!!!

Thank you all so much. It really helps to know there are prayers being sent up for me. I am always thinking of the worst possible thing to happen and it never does. I hope that's the case with this.

Thank you all. I already feel better knowing ya'll are thinking about me.
I went today to give more blood. I drank a gallon of water and had to go to the bathroom 3 times before they called me back. Then again before I left. But the nurse got blood the first time! And she was there yesterday. Anyway, now comes the waiting.

Kristin-
I know how you feel as the same happened to me some 5 years ago or so! On a routine check up a tumor was found on my thyroid also; after tests including needle biopsy, surgery was planned and it really was not so bad! The tumor was on one side of the thyroid so what they did was and told me before surgery was that while I was "under" they would remove the bad side and rush it to be tested, if it was cancer they would remove the entire thyroid; turns out it was fine and they left the other half in. Now on Synthroid but really not so bad! I also remember that most of the time they are not cancerous! If it is they say it is easily treatable, litterally so pill or pills taken for a few days or so and then gone!
Please feel free to contact me for other info or just to "talk" really

Thanks Sue. I am just not knowing anything right now and I don't like this. I feel very out of control. I hope I will know something in a few days and get this over with soon.
How did they operate? I have heard a few different ways. I just wish I could talk to a surgeon soon and find out more. So you just have half your thyroid now? Are you still on the meds? I think that's the worst part for me is being on medications. I already told the doctor I didn't want to be on cholesterol meds. I will try to control it with exercize and food. But thyroid, I don't think I can do that.
How are you feeling now? After 5 years I guess there is a lot of changes.

Kristin -
I feel fine now, but yes i guess Synthroid is for life, unfortunately. So many people take this drug. Especially women! Being on Synthroid is important, if you need to be; it actually helps something about controlling your heart. Unfortunately being on meds as you grow older is almost a fact of life! Believe me I am not pushing meds, I am not at all crazy about putting something that I consider foreign into my body daily!
As for cholesterol, I have that problem too (again as do many, many people) try fish oil or other supplements ask you doctor which might be best for you, one thing if you take Lipitor for that; you cannot eat or drink grapefruit and I don't want to give up grapefruit.
As far as surgery goes, I was put under and have about a 4 inch or so scar on the neck from the surgery. It does disppear pretty much under skin folds eventually.

Kristin, you are in my prayers. I agree, the not knowing what's going to happen and the feeling of not being in control is the worst. I pray that the tumor is benign and that the surgery goes well. I'll be thinking of you.
Hugs!

Thank you, Sue and Lainey. How is your mom, Lainey? I have not seen her on here lately.
I will get the blood test results in a few days.

I have not heard anything yet. I wish I knew. Maybe today they'll call with the blood test results they did Sat. The swelling and tenderness have somewhat gone away for now. And I just scratched off the last of the icky mole thing that was right below it, by accident of course. So no more icky mole thing.
I really do thank you ALL for your good thoughts and prayers for me. I know there are so many more people with so many more problems and difficulties than this. It looks like such a small thing in comparrison. So thanks so much for taking time for me.
Lots of hugs to everyone, Kris

Kristin, I am sure this is a very scary thing for you to go through. Try and take a deep breath and not let the fear take over. I have three friends that have all had the same type of surgery that you are facing. They all said it was way simpler than they had thought it would be. All 3 are fine too by the way. You will be too.

I got something in the mail Sat. for an appt. with a surgeon in Chatt. on April 6th. And the doctor's nurse just called with the same info. I asked about the blood test from a week ago and she said it was all normal.
So now I am confused. All blood work is good. The thyroid is good. But there is a very small growth on the right side of my thyroid. I guess I will know more in April.
Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers. It really means alot to me.

Kris, I just saw this. Sounds like the tests came back normal, but they'd like to remove the growth to inhibit any possibilities. Would have been better to have explained that, right? But, doc's are notorious for miscommunication--but better safe than sorry. I'm glad that all the results came back normal, though. Thyroid is something that never goes away--my gran took medicine for almost 30 years to try to correct her thyroid issues.
I'm thinking about you! Please keep us posted!!! |

Kristin, thinking of you. I hope you can squelch the fear so it doesn't drive you silly until April 6th. Thyroid nodules or growths are quite common and these surgeries to remove them too if that is any consolation. Hang in there like I know you can!
