You settle into a chair in the backyard to enjoy the sunshine and read the new MaryJane's Farm magazine, only to have your chicken jump up on the arm of the chair to read it too!! Honestly, that Flora!

You have a lovely flower garden with benches placed here and there in strategically planned sections to enjoy quiet moments around a large pond but you've never once sit in one long enough to even take one calming breath before you get back to digging, planting, replanting, dividing, sowing, harvesting, picking, canning, pickling, freezing, feeding/ watering/ doctoring animals, cleaning......whew...you get the picture.....LOL..... and loving every minute of it!

Your neighbor asks you why you're up at all hours of the night with a flashlight and you tell him "we're checking behinds"--it's lambing time.

You take a deep breath in the horse barn and say "What a wonderful smell!" before getting out the pitchfork and picking up horse manure!

Oh and looking at the horse manure and planning how long it needs to compost before going on the vegetable garden!!

Although you love the look of short red fingernails, the REAL reason you paint them red is to hide the dirt!!!

Yesterday I was cleaning up some of my raised beds in the garden getting ready to plant some spinach and lettuce. I had the calves out there for a few monthe to fertilize for me. My 5 year old granddaughter was "helping" her Mimi. I was raking cow poop into the garden and picked some up with my hands to throw onto the beds and she does, too. How cool is that? Not afraid to pick up poop. (It was very dry and we washed our hands.) I love homemade fertilizer!

Okay, here's another one that happened today.

You know you're a farmgirl when...you've raised two little boys who instinctively lift two fingers to wave at the old farmers when they drive by; and a 5-year-old who says, "You know, mom, I think James Hansen knows as much about sheep as sheep do. I probably just know as much as maybe a sheepdog." James Hansen is this wonderful sheep man in his 80's that my little ones "hang out" with at the corrals. My 5-year-old's best friend is about 85. How cool is that?!?!?!?!

You know you are a farmgirl when...your coffee table and kitchen table are covered with seed catalogs, sheep magazines, farming magazines, or animal pedigrees.
You know you are a farmgirl when you...go to the barn 2 or 3 times a day just to go and always finding something that needs to be done at the barn.
You know you are a farmgirl when you get up at sunrise and take your cup of hot coffee to walk around the garden and have a quiet time.
You know you are a farmgirl when you constantly monitor the health of your animals, the quality of your soil, the growth of your pastures, and the moisture in the soil, the clouds in the sky, the way the wind is blowing, and if your neighbors are out and about and OK.
Libbie, it is great that your boys have a wonderful old friend and admires him for his years of wisdom!
My 10 yr grand daughter comes to the farm and I have trouble getting her to come in the house. She is in with the sheep or at the fence talking to the cows or petting the horses, wants to stay out after dark and up early to hit it again the next morning...
I thank The Lord every day that he has planted me here on this farm and many days I ask for more energy and time in the day!
Peace and joy to all!
Sarita

You know you're a farmgirl when the local Lion's club volunteers (coming to get free wood for elderly people) come mostly to see what form of entertainment you're up to that day.Be it our three year old on the top of the round pen touching "Belle" every turn of her trotting around,
or on Belle in a cute pink dress in tights while I'm brushing her and trimming feet.
Today it was three of us trying to push ourselves up a steep hill on a scooter built for one.The thirteen year old hanging off the back the three year old standing between my knees holding onto the handlebar. We laughed all the way up the hill. Cheap thrills!!!

When you find yourself giving your chicken a bath in the kitchen sink, because she has poop stuck in her back end feathers. :(
Katie- Cheap thrills with your kids are the best!!
Isn't it nice to be a farmgirl?

Sarita - isn't it just AMAZING to watch children interact in the natural world? It's one of life's great pleasures (and, heck, you can learn a lot from them, too!).
