I've seen a post for this before, and am having trouble with my sleepy head remembering where...

In all the gardening catalogs, they have this little tool for making seed starter pots/cups out of newspapers. On the thread I saw before someone recommended using a soda can (farmgirl ingenuity!).

My questions: If you use a soda can, what size do you cut the paper to, and how do you fold the paper around it to make the cup?

Thanks for your help!

It just makes sense to do the "reuse" part of reduce-reuse-recycle. We always have plenty of newspapers on hand because we put them in our bunnies' cages. If it's something that the kids and I can do ourselve with materials we already have on hand, then why not!

BTW, my kids and I have started a 4th R (see the 3 R's above): Rethink. If you rethink how things are used, then you will find a way to reduce-reuse-recycle them. Example: Old T-shirts. Everyone uses them for rags when they've past their prime, but did you know that you can use them for reusable produce bags at the store? Think of how much oil that would save us if everyone used reusable produce bags as well as grocery bags! You can also reuse child size t-shirts to make gift bags for smaller items. Things that make you go hmmmm.

Ann GREAT ideas! Thanks for hte link! Also found one for reusing old t-shirts over a bulletin board - not quite as "green" but a good idea for those favorite ones you want to look at more often.

Has anyone used the newspaper pots? I hear you're uspposed to just use the b/w pages.

I made little newspaper pots from the b/w sections of the paper and started my tomatoes from seed last year. It worked really well. Took a while to make enough pots, but they are bigger and deeper than peat pots. The lazy me thought I should have just used plastic cups, because they are pretty cheap too.

I actually have had my husband making these for the last two days so we could get the seeds planted this weekend! He's made 48 so far ... does it in front of the TV while "his shows" are on ... that way he's still being useful
