I picked up a nifty pamphlet from the library yesterday called "The big Read" They're focusing on Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. A whole host of programs is listed inside.

Most of these events are free -you have to pick up tickets at the following libraries:

Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Indian Prairie, LaGrange, LaGrange Park, Lisle, Thomas Ford, Westmont, Woodridge.

So many great topics! I'm marking my calendar for a few. Food for thought, lessons from an 1890 kitchen, rain garden & voluntary simplicity to name a few.

Wow! What a great idea! I hadn't heard about this program. I printed the info and will be taking it to my local library to see if they can hold this event too.

Thanks for letting us know about it Deb. I hadn't heard about it and some of those towns are just north of me, so I'll be able to check it out too.

That's it. Did you know there is also Plum Creek Nature center in Beecher? It's on our list to visit this summer.

Environmental Learning center in Mokena:

There's the Sugar Creek Ad center in Joliet in the event anyone is a homeschooler. They have educational loaner boxes.

We never go that far south, so I think we're going to make an extra effort this summer. The nature centers are free. We'll just pack a lunch and head out.

In southern Cook County there's the Little Red School House - we drove out last week. I couldn't believe the construction going on! They're getting a new facility. It's going to be beautiful. They'll be able to take in many more animals. http://www.fpdcc.com/tier3.php?content_id=27&file=env_27c

Sand Ridge nature center in South Hollands looks like fun! http://www.fpdcc.com/tier3.php?content_id=27&file=env_27d

We went on a fossil dig with Camp Sagawau one time. http://www.fpdcc.com/tier3.php?content_id=27&file=env_27e

Hope I didn't overload this post with links! Yikes! I can't wait for summer. Can you tell? If it's for free - it's for me! I need lots of low cost things to do with my girls. They love nature centers.

Oh! Another favorite: http://www.lakekatherine.org/ If you hike along, it's either the river or the canal there to Harlem Ave. there is a UIC Garden tucked back in there. I think it's the Extension Master Gardner's work. (Behind the hot dog place) It's a nice hike.

Deb,
What a great idea this whole concept is especially in this economy! I just picked up the book at our local library and will be meeting with the "librian" tomorrow to discuss the possibilities of interest for our small community. And you are putting together a calendar - wow! I live in a house with lots of history and now that I "retired" this is the life I am hoping to experience.
Thankyou,
Sandy

Well Deb, welcome to my area! I've been going to all the places you mentioned since I was a kid (I'm 48). There is tons to see and do out here. Grundy County is gorgeous too if you want to head further south of Joliet. IL is a big, beautiful and diverse state! It is gorgeous out west in Ogle County, along the Mississippi River! With so much to do in IL, you don't have to leave the state!
