| Hello, I was wondering if any of you gals have tried these? I've been looking for some different seeds on line and these seem interesting to try. I've read that you need to use quite a bit of sugar to the huckleberry in order to use it for pies or preserves. I've just started to try to grow stevia and wondering if I could use this to offset the sugar. Thanks for any help or suggestions. |

I have grown ground cherries, my DH loves them. I have made jam out of them and pie. Ground cherries are very prolific and will reseed themselves every where.

Gorund cherries are awesome they grow very well here in zone 5 we grow them in a tomato cage and they are easy to see to pick they are so yummy both sweet and sour... very addicting!

hey Kristine,
I am not real knowledgable about Ground Cherries & Garden Huckleberries, so keep us posted. I have asked about Huckleberries & was informed that Wild Huckleberries do not grow well in gardens,,,but it sounds like the Huckleberries you are talking about are a different varity... I have 3 year old blueberry plants that produced very well last year & I am hoping they survived our "delightful" Spoakne Winter...
On the plus side,,,,my tulips are poking their heads up through the ground! yippeeee!

Grace, I hope those blueberries make it! Yum! When I lived in Mid Michigan, I would get so excited when the tulips started poking up.
From the information I could gather- "garden huckleberries" are unrelated to huckleberries and not a huckleberry at all so I'm not sure why they are named that. They are part of the nightshade family like tomatoes and potatoes and are suposed to resemble a bell pepper plant. The berries are said to be toxic until fully ripened but make great pies and preserves...you just have to sweeten them. I'm waiting for my seeds via mail and probably won't get them for about a week.
Kristine, I can't wait to find out how easy/hard they are to germinate, how long until harvest and if they really are tasty. Please let us how things go when you start them. There's nothing like getting information from someone with firsthand experience- instead of gathering info randomly from the net.

Thanks Abigail for the explaination of the differences of garden & real huckleberries.
We have grown tomatillo, which is a relative to the ground cherry. They germinate, grow and produce well here in western Wa. Even in years when tomatoes don't. I'm encouraged to try them!
