So, as some of you may remember, I tried to make the sour dough bread the Mary Jane way. And as some of you may remember, each time I baked a rock....I purchased two cast iron pots. A couple bags of organic flour. So you see, I had a small investment that was not paying out for me.

So.....after my husband made a couple more requests for fresh baked bread, I decided to get out my 1963 Better Holmes and Garden bread book. (Now please keep in mind, I was born in 1962. This book has been in the family for a while.

After 6 cups of sifted flour, 2 cups of scalded milk. Some white sugar and salt. OH, and of course, the 1/4 cup of warm water and one package of dry yeast.....(and don’t forget the 2 1/2 hours of rise...)

Looks good...

I punched it down. And waited about another 2 Hours. Split the mass in two.

One loaf is plain white bread. The cast iron pot has a cinnamon swirl loaf.
I cooked the plain bread for about 30-35 minutes.
Then the cinnamon swirls for 30-35 minutes.
Wow...did the house smell yummy...

The sugar and cinnamon made some nice syrup around the loaf. It was all bubbly.
I added a simple powder sugar, butter, vanilla extract frosting.
yummy, yummy, yummy.

Now, in time, when it is a little warmer I will again try the Mary Jane sour dough bread. I love sour dough bread.
But for the moment, I think I will stick to Better Homes and Gardens...

I should have baked some more bread yesterday. We had that nasty northeaster hit NJ. It was not a lot of snow, but gosh it was freezing.
But I agree with you Michele, anyway home baked bread is great!

Oh Kathy,
Your bread looks delicious! I think you did not get as much snow as we did in our section of NJ. We got plenty and it drifted so was a real mess here. I think I will have to get out the Bosch and mix up some dough. I make whole wheat and it has been a very long time since I've had a chance to make any. But you have inspired me. Do I understand that you baked the cinnamon loaf in a cast iron pan in the oven?

Denise,
Yes I baked the cinnamon loaf in a 2 quart cast iron dutch oven.
It baked up wonderfully.
I dont remember what part of NJ you are from. I am south central. We got about 6-8 inches. But it was kind of fluffy. The wind was wicked tho.

I have some money coming to me from our company stock option plan. I am going to purchase the best stand mixer I can find. My daughter works at Bed Bath and beyond. I can get some realy good deals on demo/shelf models. It is something I have always wanted but just did not feel right purchasing.
