Hello everyone! Does anyone have any easy and specific plans for building cold frames for my spring seedlings. My last frost date is May 1 ish . I have started seed inside in the past, but they never seem to transition well to the garden. My daughter even rolled her eyes when I came home this week with 50 packets of seeds. She said she get the compost pile ready. Just love teenagers-at least I persist in my hopes of being an awesome gardener. I thought if I added cold frames to the process I could gain a week or two and hopefully have more success with my transplants. I don't have any old windows, but I did see at one of the box stores large clear sheets of plexiglass that could be cut down. Wasn't sure how to get it altogether or if I was thinking along the right lines. Any tips, suggestions or links would be super duper. Lorraine

If you go to Mother Earth News they have a varity of choices. I like to put newspaper between the rows and clear plastic over my new plants, especially at night and early morning. I am sure you will get many more suggestions to help. One thought, have you checked the PH for your garden?? That might be part of your problems with growing.

Have you thought of going to the freecycle.com group in your area and see if anyone has old windows to give-away?

my husband just built me a cold frame. There are tons of directions and plans for them online. Just do a google search and you will be amazed. I got a Storey pamphlet that had directions, but there were so many online that I would not have gotten the booklet! Using old windows is a great idea.

I'm with Renee...that's really similar to what we did this year, but last year I was very anxious and simply used bails of straw in a square and put the window on top.

I live on a street with 1900's cottages and someone is ALWAYS throwing out wonderful windows, so I just trash pick and have quite the collection.

I built one out of straw bales one year. Pretty much the same design with a large window over the top. It worked great.
