does anyone ever get chalky-looking eggs...bland, matte finish...they taste just the same...but they just don't look as pretty to sell...someone else posted a site of how long ago..people rubbed them with lard, then buffed several times to "seal" the pores and keep them fresh longer...so i rubbed a small amt. of shortening on mine, then buffed them....and they turned out so nice and shiny..brought out a deeper, richer color....and they are much nicer to look at....does anyone else get "chalky" eggs? what causes this and can you do something about it? thanks!

You finally got your chickens to lay? How exiting! I have never done that before with the lard. No one's ever said anything about the way the eggs looked. I never wash my eggs, either. Unless they are extremely dirty. Then they go in the fridge. But I bet they are pretty after doing all that to them. I would just want to put them in a pretty basket and keep them on the counter to look at.

I don't know- all the eggs I have ever bought- both store and farm fresh have had a matte finish to them. I think I would worry what had been done to the eggs if they were shiny!

Our "girls" lay matte finish eggs too and some are a bit speckled.. They look natural to me..

Our hens give us matte finish eggs, too. We have quite an assortment - green/blue, white/ brown/ brown speckled, banty.
They make a nice looking basket.
I've heard of rubbing them with oil, but I thought that it was for preservation. I'm probably wrong on that.
I bet yours do look very pretty and would make a nice picture.

I have heard you should not wash your eggs for fear of samilia. It can go thru the egg shell. I wonder if the lard would as well?

We have one chicken that always gives the matt finish eggs...she's the Barred Rock hen. The other two give more shiny eggs, especially the Rhode Island Red. Coincidence??
