I am in my third week of my starter and I have some questions I hope someone can help me with. I used 4 cups of King Arthur Organic All-Purpose Four and 3 cups of purified water (I add 2/3 cup flour and 1/2 cup water for 6 days.). I don't have a ceramic bowl. The only thing I have is plastic to put it in. And, I keep damp cheesecloth and a plate over it making sure to leave some breathing room. When I uncover it, there is a layer of brownish liquid on top. Is this normal? I have tried to make bread 2 times and have yet to get it to rise. Help.

Hi Donna! Welcome to the farm. Please refer to this thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=28238 and it will answer all your questions about the bread and if you have more you can post them there.
The liquid is called Hooch, is completely normal and can be stirred right back in. Let us know if we can help you any more!
