On my Dh suggestion I was going to make chocolate dipped strawberries out of a LAGRE hersey kiss he gave me for V-day. Well I put it in a microwave bowl and melted it....Well I thought it was melting...Until I took it out and started to stir it....And to my surprise it turned into almost powder. It only microwaved for about 40 seconds...Can anyone tell me what happened??? And wht can I do with this now that it is almost powder???? Thanks Deborah

Wow! That's not something I would have expected. I've never tried melting chocolate in the microwave; I've always melted it in a double boiler. But, still, I can't imagine why you wouldn't then have at least soft chocolate?! Kind of scary, though. Makes me wonder what they are actually making them with now?

Sadly it is because Hershey's kisses have a lot of ingredients besides chocolate:( I know, how can they mess with our chocolate? Amy Grace

You can try adding milk to it in a saucepan and slowly bringing it to a boil. That should get it back to melty stage. Since hersheys is milk chocolate, and if you melt it in the microwave and the milk evaporates, all youve got left is the cocoa powder. ;) hugs

I've done chocolate in the microwave before. I've done it for 15-20 seconds - stir - put back in for another 15-20 seconds. Keep repeating until it's smooth. A friend of mine adds a bit of margarine to hers.

I always use a high quality chocolate for recipes. Hershey's and Nestle are full of other ingredients, so never use them!

I've never had that happen...but then, I use Ghiradelli to melt. I use a double broiler, but the recipe I have for homemade turtles says to melt in the microwave, and so I do. Never have had chocolate turn to dust before! |

did you microwave it a 50% power? if you want to melt the choc for candy you put it at half (50%) power for 30 seconds, take out and stir, repeat....until it's melted. by the way, i made choc covered strawberries, too....dark choc on one side and white choc on the other! |
