Hello! I'm so excited! I just bought a vintage 3-speed Raleigh bicycle on eBay -- YAY!!!! ![](http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y297/GaelicGardener/bike.jpg) It has a metal rack on the back and I want to put "saddlebags" (I think the official name is pannier bags) on it so I can put groceries & purchases in it. Of course I'm too cheap to pay the RIDICULOUS prices they want for them, so I'm thinking of making my own. Any ideas for repurposing? thanks, Kelly ![](icons/icon_smile_approve.gif) |

I saw an article once where a person used office size trash cans as saddle bags. 1 on each side bolted to the bike. I'll see if I still have the article.

Those look SO heavy!! The bike bags are very cheap here, and fun to see. I have a set my mom gave me, yellow with pink flowers.

Oooooooooooohhhhh Marian! Now you've got me hooked on Basil Bags! aaarrrrghhhh! But they're still too expensive -- they would cost the same as I'd make in a day as a substitute [sad, but true!] Besides, I'm trying to be good and recycle something. I WILL BE GOOD -- I WILL BE! being good, Kelly

Kelly, Love the bike and can't wait to see what you come up with. I think bicycles are one of the best inventions ever. Just rode mine 16 miles today for fun and exercise. If you need something to carry things in until you find something better I see a lot of people with milk crates strapped onto the top of their pannier racks. Make it even more farmgirlish with a wicker basket strapped on top of the rack. Seems more and more people are riding today which makes me happy. Please post pics when you come up with your panniers. Happy and Safe Cycling to You!

LOVE IT! Do they hold up well? I'm wondering about grocery store, library, fishing? Things like that, that will weigh me down.

I put SO much in them, groceries, books (don't fish) and other heavy things. I don't have a car so NEED sturdy ones, lol. And yes my bike IS sturdy, I often put so much on the back and in the bags that it is getting heavy YIKES!! Outside can be wiped down with a damp cloth, they are sealed. I love these, and as soon as they need replacing I will buy pink ones, lol. Like I said these were given to me by my mom so a sentimental value :)

Marian! You're an enabler! But the few companies that carry these in the US charge about $60 for them! I think I'll go to the Army/Navy and get some canvas bags and rig them up. I did see a nice wicker basket for the front at Walmart and it was only $20 but there is a backwards L-shaped metal piece (hook?) on the front of my bike and I'm not sure a basket would rest right. I will post new pictures when I get it all figured out... ciao bellas! --Kelly

Deb, that's actually the cheapest I've seen them on a US site! You can also look for them on eBay. --Kelly

By the way if anybody's looking for an excellent quality bike basket, I got mine from Peterboro Basket Company in New Hampshire. Woven wood, I think they're just gorgeous :D
http://www.peterborobasket.com/default.aspx
They're a little more money than Wal-Mart wicker, but they're excellent quality and made in the USA, not China! I know my bike basket's going to last a very long time, and it looks very cool on my 1972 Schwinn Breeze.
Another thought for the pannier bags - if you do go Amry/Navy - crochet some cute flowers to sew on and dress them up!
