Today was a day when I should have stayed in bed. Ever had those days? keept waking up last night,because of the wind. I kept hearing the windchimes.So needless to say I was a little tired today. About 7 am I went to my sewing room to work on a quilt that I am making for a sweet lady, and left around 8 am because I put the same seam in 3 times so I thought I should just come back later. A friend of mine called and she has a little shop in our town and asked if I could babysit the shop while she went to parent teacher confrence for her son. Sure I said, no problems ther but when I got home I let myself in with my key and then I guess I locked the door back so when I went to get some stuff out of my car I was locked out. since I don't have a key hidden I had to call my husband and he had to come home and let me in. So I told you all of that just to find out where do you hide your key? I am doing that tonight.

Some people I know use a water proof container that they have placed the key into and then buried under some rocks that are under a bush hedge leading up to the front door. Another thought would be to tape to the bottom of a potted plant, or even leave one taped inside your glove box of your car(s). I am suggesting using tape as unscrupulous people make pick up/tip over a plant or even open cars to try to find extra eyes, but if it is taped to a place they aren't expecting like the bottom of a pot or the top of the glove box, they will be that much less likely to spot it.

We used to keep a set to house door in a old tin that served as a garden decoration. Now we put a key under a 1/2 planter pot that got broken. It lays on its side like 1/2 is buried but it is only 1/2 a pot it lays on some creeping plant in the planter beside the garage. You could also put an extra key in your purse, or if you live by a close trusting neighbor give her one. Another suggestion would be to keep one in a magnetic keep a key box under your hood of your car or under the fender. You could put an extra key taped to a door decoration, like a wreath on your door..
Ok.. now that I have told the world where we keep our house key i better move it.. :)

We taped our behind a shutter on the house in a little velco on the head of the key. We attached it where no one can see it and I think it is a safe spot. Yes/No??? : )

We used to keep one duct tape under neath the hood of our car. It seemed to work out pretty well..:)

It was just last week I did this same thing. I was heading out to take the kids to school. Had my arms full of everything I needed for the day, locked the door and pulled it shut. Got to the car and no keys and guess what else- no cell phone. My driveway was a solid sheet of ice. The kids thought that was quite comical watching me walk up the drive to go over to my aunt's to use the phone to call my mom. She's not far away, but we were all still late. So I'm with you, Tina, looking for a place to hide a key. I have been thinking of somewhere in the car. I have a ledge above my door but I think that would be really obvious.

Some people leave a key with their neighbor, of course they will have to be home when you lock yourself out! Or keep your key under your neighbor's mat and let your neighbor keep theirs under yours..... just to confuse anyone who might have malicious intentions, or look in the obvious place
Here are some other ideas I have heard of-
Tape it, or use a magnetic key box, under the mailbox
Hang it from a certain branch on a certain bush or tree
On a nail inside the unlocked garage
Keep an extra in your purse, but don't leave the purse in the house
Here's another idea - it's what we do - we have a electronic combination lock on our garage door opener. I don't need a key, just to remember the right PIN.

| I favor keeping a spare house key in the car, or leaving one with a neighbor. I figure an experienced burglar will have seen all the possible hiding places around the entryway. And something that's hidden to your eyes might be obvious to someone of a different height or perspective. My mil used to keep a spare key behind a decorative doorstop on her front porch. She insisted it was well hidden and perfectly safe, but I know that whenever I came to her door and knocked, I could see that key just sitting there plain as day. |

See, thats the trouble that I am having hiding my key. I know that where I hide it some theif will know right where to look. A friend of mine has a rotwilier she put her spare key around his neck I thought that was soooo funny. I don't think that would work for me I have a yorkie. My husband said maybe in a little piece of tubin in the ground under a planter. I wish I could leave one with the neighbors but they are all snobby uper class. It have realy built up around our little 3 acres.

We keep our key on a dogwood tree in our back yard.It is just hanging on a lower branch. So far no one has found it. Good luck.

I keep mine in the telephone box on the side of the house. It opens easily and is slightly hidden behind my lilacs. And I told my neighbor where it is as we had a threat of a fire one year and I was out of town. He was afraid he would have to break in to try and save items while it was threatened. God bless good neighbors. Luckily he didn't have to break in. :)

My mother has a copy with her good neighbor. If she isn't home, we all know the "code" to her garage system--the year she and my mom were born. They also share birthdays :) They have been friends and neighbors for MANY years, so obviously, trust is key (um...no pun intended).
I rarely leave a key, but when I do, it's taped underneath the cushion on our porchswing. |

The problem I have with hiding a key or anything else is that it will stay hidden, cus for the life of me I have no idea where I put it. So needless to say, I do have to leave my house key with my neighbor. I just love getting older. I once had a license plate frame that said "I suffer from CRS" (can't remember sh--), boy did it fit me. But as usually I forgot it was still on my car when I bought a new one. Go figure.

My neighbor has mine and I have hers. She is elderly and just wanted me to have a key just in case. SO I decided to give her mine, also just in case.
AND I have one hidden somewhere in my backyard, lol. NO not gonna tell where, it is a secret, shhh

you're gonna laugh....I made a collage' out of old keys and put our house key in the center. The picture hangs by the back door in full view...If I ever need the key, I take down the picture and remove the key....luckily I've never had to use it yet....

| My father was in law enforcement for 30 years, and advised NEVER hide a key. What he has advised is a key locker similar to what real estate people use, you can buy ones that can be permently attached to the house in an inconspicous spot and you use a combination to open it. Virtually impossible to break into. We have had one for years and no problems. The website www.Improvements.com used to have them at a reasonable price. |
