Well this happened about 2 weeks ago now, but I haven't had a chance to post about it yet.
So I was planning on shampooing my carpets and I know Vinegar works wonders on everything and helps soaps rinse away clean. So I put a cup of Vinegar in the wash water of my carpet shampooer and did half the living room and on the other half I just did the soap and water like the instructions say.
I noticed immediately that the carpet fibers seemed to perk up and make the carpet more plush. It is a rather thin carpet (think hotel style carpet) so more plush is definitely nice! And the colors seemed deeper and more vibrant.
Well 2 weeks later I can still tell which half has the vinegar and which half didn't! It feels like about a 1/4 inch difference if not more when you are walking on it. And I have noticed that the vinegar side is vacuuming up easier too!
So next time you use your carpet shampooer, think of adding some vinegar in with your soap or if you do a rinse too, add the vinegar to the rinse.
My carpet doesn't smell like vinegar once it has dried and in fact Vinegar helps de-nature a lot of smells! So your rugs might be sweeter smelling for it as well!

Great idea, Alee! I bet it helped lift the old soap residue from the carpet fibers the same as it lifts the soap in the wash. I don't have carpet either, but my parents do. I think we'll give this a try at their house. You are such a clever girl. :)

Who knew!?!?!?! Thank you Alee! I have a whole houseful of carpet which I do not approve of but it is what it is and I can't afford to replace it right now so your tip is GREAT as I am getting ready to shampoo it...one room at a time! I figured winter with heat on is a better time than summer with humidity....it might take too much time to dry then. Great advice...you always have the best tips and you are SO young but so wise! thanks again Sweetie and give that Nora a big kiss and hug from Grandma Sam!

I'd love to but I doubt it. It's been an expensive year here and I am planning on putting in a big garden which will need to be pampered especially in July here.....lots of watering and attention. But ya never know.....I could win the lottery (although I don't play so that might be difficult) or I could run into a windfall...we'll see but thanks for asking! It would be great to meet all of you!

It amazes my how simple ever day things make life so green. Thanks Alee didn't think of using vinegar for carpets. I try this on our basement rugs. Its not a plush carpet but it still could use a cleaning this spring.

I dont know tat I would use my home carpet for testing stuff, WOW Alee, you must have some cahones......Thank you for the tip. I too am not loving my current carpet but HB wont let me replace it until the dogs are dead (they're indoor), so we have a deal, whomever goes first, him or the dogs, I get new carpet.

Hi Kim-
Well I knew it wouldn't hurt it! I would probably test in a hidden spot first if I was worried about something hurting the carpet. Vinegar also denatures protein which is a huge component in a lot of smells like urine and even dog body odor smell. So I figured if nothing else it would take care of any doggy smell in the carpet from where Sky likes to lay down at.

Kim...you're a hoot! I am glad to hear about taking care of animal smells since I'm sure with my dog and cat it could use it!

So we put the vinegar in with the soap? Does anyone know if JUST vinegar would clean a carpet well? I use it to wash floors with so would it get carpets clean enough without soap? -Elizabeth |

I used vinegar on this old carpet here in the rental. Half water half vinegar. Worked great! Open the windows when your doing the carpets though. I tasted vinegar for the rest of the evening. Yack! Carla

hey girls, if you use the tsp be sure to disolve in hot water first. then strain through a cloth to get ant chunks out. it keeps you from clogging the sprayer. i rinse with vinegar water. the tsp makes the water slippery which helps release the dirt in carpet. hope it helps happy days sherye
