Well, if you read my previous post about quilting you know I went to the quilting class on Saturday. As it turns out, it is on hand pieceing, not hand quilting, but that is fine with me, Anything to get out the house and frankly I have never hand pieced a quilt.
So, Saturday all we did was pick out our material and such. But, when the teacher handed me a pack of size 12 needles I waved my fingers in front of her and said, do you see how short and fat my fingers are, I don't think I can even hold that needle.
Now, what size needle do you use? And while we are on questions, do you pin or baste? If you find a quilt pattern you really like in a book, how do you figure yardage?
Another one, just for good measure, what are you having for supper?

I wish I could answer your other questions, but we are having bbq chicken from the crockpot tonight, with oven roasted acorn squash and cornbread muffins.
All of the quilts I've ever done came from either books or patterns that listed the yardage. This link may be helpful:

I use a size 7 needle.
I love to hand piece too.
My fingers are short too
I think that would be fine for you to learn with
After you get use to hand piecing you can use different sizes.
The reason for such a small needle is that ; it suppose to keep the stitches smaller.
That also comes with practice.

Kathy you are not alone about showing up to a class and finding out it was not what you thought - maybe the universe has a plan for you.
To answer your questions, I have short fingers but I say they are just nimble.. Size 7 is standard but when I teach sewing I do not feel the needle makes the stitches but rather the person sewing so if you need a larger size do it at home and out of sight of the teacher. I do pin - hate to baste unless I am making clothing where I want to try it on before really making it. As for yardage I am horrible about that - I love fabric so I just purchase tons and add to my huge stash...
As for dinner I am having fresh juiced fruit and homemade bread with spruce jelly. Lunch is my big meal of the day and dinner much lighter...

When I asked the lady if she was sure she wanted me to use that small of a needle she said you can't get the rocking motion with a larger needle, so time will tell. But I probably will use a larger one at home. However, I am not so sure my fingers are too nimble though, but I will certainly give it a shot. I am so glad to hear you pin, I hate basting.
