I need some suggestions on cleaning a cast iron dutch oven. I bought it yesterday at a thrift store for $1 so I am not out anything If i can't get it clean. The outside & lid are perfect, the inside appears to be really either rusted deeply or the inside deeply seasoned & burned. I washed it and wiped it out and very little rust residue came off. What can I clean it with.

My grandpa used to build a fire, outside, and put in the old, dirty cast iron pans, and burn them? Never tired it myself.

I would scrub it with and SOS pad and then coat it really well with oil and then I would put it in the oven at a 200* and let it bake for a few hours checking it to see it it needed more oil.

Cheryl, I've read a article of an old woman who said every fall when they burned leaves, she would put her cast iron pan in the fire then when it cooled she would season it again. As far as what Diana said, that's just what I did with an old "griswold" cast iron pan my DH had on his porch when I moved out here, it had nuts/bolts, screws, dirt, leaves, etc, you get the picture. Well I took it in the house and scoured the daylights out of it with SOS pads then washed it a few more times with as hot a water as I could stand. Then I seasoned it all over but I put it in a 400 degree oven until it smoked good, then I pulled it out wiped it all with paper towels, recoated it and let it cool in the oven that was beginning to cool. I've used it for nearly 4 years now, never had a bad taste in anything I've made in it. Let us know how it turns out for you and what method you find. You could also check on line for other options. Thanks Cindy, Diana & Michele for the input . My Dh brought some SOS from the store AFTER I had scrubbed it as good as I could & put it in theoven 350 degrees.. after it cooled It really looks coated with cooked on oil... but I may start over tomorrow and give it another good scrubbing and repeat the seasoning..I will let you know what happens.

From the photo it looks like maybe it is enamel on the outside, and some has worn away on the inside?
I love my cast iron pans, I use them every day. I seasoned them with oil, and I use Martha Stewart's advice and clean them with kosher salt instead of scouring them.
I have a couple of cast-iron cookbooks that tell how to season them but I am not sure about enameled cast iron. They mostly cover just the plain cast iron ones without the enamel.

Cheryl -- Do you have a self-cleaning oven? I scrub the pots out as good as I can with steel wool then put it in the oven for the "cremate" cycle. Works great. Then you just season it and you're ready to go.

Judith, I never thought of that. I suppose it can't hurt. Thanks Brenda, I think it is emameled on the outside.. Kind of a gray blue speckled. Some inside at the top of the pan. Do you think I can clean it like Judith suggested & use it to cook in afer I reseason it?

If it is enameled I don't think it would be good to cremate it, but it would look dandy with petunias planted in it.
