My Grandmother taught me this trick. We have an extra freezer in the garage. Freezers are the most energy efficient when they are full. When I finish a half gallon of milk, I rinse the carton out, fill it with water and put it in the freezer. If the power goes out I don't have to worry. It stays cool with all the blocks of ice thruout it. It is also wonderful in the summer. I use the frozen cartons in coolers for picnics and camping and parties. I never have to buy ice.

Oh man! That is an excellent idea, wished I'd tried that before our power outage, we had to throw several things away. I am going to do this. Thanks Laura!

What a great and simple idea. We tend to lose the power out here a lot in the summer. I will definitely keep a frozen container of water in the freezer! Thanks for the tip.

We lose power a ton here. I think I should expand on this a little. I don' keep just one container in the freezer. Everytime I finish a milk container I check the freezer. I any extra room and I add a milk container of water. When I buy a lot at the grocery store and I need more freezer space I just get rid of the extra milk containers. My freezer literally becomes an icebox when the power is out. Right now I have 10 half gallon containers of ice in my freezer.

Great idea, power goes off here a lot but I have never had to worry as the most was for 5 hrs. But I will still do this as when I lose power I lose water. I have a well, so it would be handy to have that water for all purposes. Any water I need to throw away can go on my plants. Thanks. :)

What a great idea. Wish I still had my big old freezer. Not only will you keep your food cold in an outage but you will have drinking water in case a situation cuts off your water supply. Smart thinking!
