Little things like this just tickle me! I was in line buying my Borax for my hm laundry detergent and and older lady in line in front of me commented on it. She told me it works great for washing walls. I told her of my mishap with one of those "magic erasers". Leaving all kinds of streaks on my walls... Uggh!
Today I decided to try it. I used about a quart of warm water and 2 tbsp. of Borax. Talk about magic eraser! I have a narrow hallway leading upstairs so it's a magnet for handprints. Voila' gone! My walls look incredible!
I'm on a wall washing mission now!

That's great because I always used TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) which can be a little hard on the hands...I have never felt comfortable using gloves for washing or gardening...and my hands show it! LOL!

Thanks for the wall washing suggestions. I've been slowly washing down all of our walls and giving the house a detailed cleaning. I like to get it all done when I'm trapped inside thanks to the cold. Once the nicer weather hits, I plan to spend every moment possible outside in my yard!

I use Borax for cleaning pretty much anything in the house and it hasn't damaged any surfaces. In your post you mentioned "magic eraser" just a note of caution for the product. About a year ago a friend of mine sent an email.. A lady she knows let her child (age 4) clean crayon marks off the wall with "magic eraser." Being a kid they got the "cleaning product" on their arms, cheeks and hands. The child's skin looked like a really bad sunburn - peeling, cracking, just horrible - The mom of the child sent the pictures to her friends so they wouldn't make the mistake. Fortunately, child was okay and minimal scars. Mom felt awful and sent out the warning. Needless to say, I got rid of the Magic Eraser in my house. |

I don't have a backsplash behind my stove, just a painted wall. It was pretty bad. I could never get the grease splatter off of it.
Borax did the job! I could do commercials for this stuff!

Where do you get Borax? In the laundry detergent section? We have a standing joke in our house about my crusade cleaning with Vinegar and water...I have to try some Borax though.
We burn wood inside during the winter and I dread the thought of spring cleaning those darn walls.
Can't I just paint over it???

Melody- Yes, borax is in the laundry aisle. It is normally in a green/teal colored box with a big white "label" on it. Look for it in the "laudry aides" section with non-chlorine bleach and such.

I will be washing walls tomorrow and I kept my borax at the old rental because I remembered this tip! I can't wait to see how much it gets off since the walls were never clean even when we moved in!
