I got this Jar at Goodwill today for $5. It says "Sanitary refrigerator Jar" And then below the glass knob it says "Adaptable for Meats, poultry, vegetables, butter, cheese, fruit, etc"
Here is a picture of a part of the lid:
Is has my Sourdough starter in it but here is a pic from the side and a better one of the top:

It looks like a plain old food storage container pre-Rubbermaid. These were often given away as a gift with the purchase of a refrigerator. I've never seen one exactly like this one, but mainly sort of square or rectangular with flat lids that you could stack.

I have never seen one like it. Like Jana, I've only seen the square and rectangular ones. That is a really cool jar. Lucky you!

I bet the reason you usually find the square and rectangular ones is they are more space efficient than the round. Cool tho, perfect for sourdough starter.

I found lots of information about refrigerator jars online, but none that looked exactly like this one. I just wonder how old it is. Th glass has a little bit of tint like it is trying to turn purple. It will be interesting to see if the sun will turn it purple!

Obviously it is a refrigerator jar, but, I have never come across one like it. I love it. I like just the regular aquare and rectangle ones. But, I think you have a real find here. Let us know if you find out any more about it. Maybe Miss Wilma would know about it.

Aleen, That is a nice looking jar. But I have a question about your sourdough starter. I thought about starting a batch. Is this your first batch? If not, have you had any problems with past batches?

Hi Kathy- Well Ronna sent me some dehydrated starter that was fabulous until it died during our move to Billings. I was so sad! So that was my first experience with sourdough
But this is my first batch that I started on my own. It is doing wonderfully! I followed the instructions at www.breadthemaryjaneway.org

Alee, If you can't find any information, try Country Living magazine, they have a page each issue that people send in a picture and description of the item and they tell them what it is, the date, and what it's worth. Or maybe the "Good Old Days" magazine could help you. If you need contact info for either email me.

Alee, I just received my maryjane magazine and seen an artical. I am thinking about starting a batch myself. So, first a trip to whole foods supermarket for the flour and I hope to start this weekend. If not then then feb 7th for sure. And, just so you know, that is a cool jar. I think I remember my great grandmother having something like that. But I could be wrong. I am also going to try the www.breadthemaryjaneway.org site too. I will try and let you know how I make out with my bread.
