Somewhere one of you farmgirls made mention of doing some needle felting. I have never heard of that before. Could you explain the process, and what it is used for?  Julia V.

Julia..I just got an book for my birthday called "Felted Knits" by Beverly Galeskas...and she has a section on needle felting! It is a method using felting needles and spare fiber or yarn to embellish your felted knit projects. The needles are very fine and have barbs on them which when stabbed into the wool, the barbs catch small amounts of the surface fiber, carrying them down and locking them into the fibers below. Basic explanation but I will copy those pages and send them with the felted crocheted rug/coasters instructions.  Mumsie

| For needle felting ideas go to ebay and search needle felted- you will be amazed at what you can do with some loose wool and a sharp needle. It is very easy to learn and is good for stress relief- all that poking! I find that you can get all you need at A Childs Dream Come True online or at your local knitting store if the stock roving and felting needles. I teach needle felting classes and the possibilities are endless- we have made bags, gnomes, fairies, balls, ornaments, garden goddesses, nativities, trees, etc. Have fun! Rebekka |

| Look on the Fons and Porter websight too. They did empty needle felting a couple of Saturdays ago on their show, looked pretty easy! |

Gosh...when I get to it I am glad to know you do it (make felt I mean) Helen!! I think wet felt is what I want to make the most..but maybe will try needle felting some time too. I am just so clumsy and those needles look pretty scarey to me. I mean..I am seriously clumsy. I finally traded away my wool combs and went back to the cards and my drum carder since I was going to hurt myself bad with them. Felting is for sure on my THIS YEAR list of things to learn.

| LOL, your pretty safe with wet felting Jenny, but needle felting needles are sharp. I always get pricked, but there are holders for them or you can make you own from a wine cork or polyma clay. Danged if I can get the handle on using hand carders though, always use the drum and probably not as to how it is to be designed to be used either. |

I always wonder if I am using it correctly too. I KNOW I don't use the hand carders the way normal people do..but it works for me. I have alot of carding to do right now so I may haul out the drum carder. Makes me feel productive since it is so much faster.

The gals I saw on TV just used their sewing machine to do needle felting...with no thread in it, just used the needle to push the yarn through the wool...are we talking about the same thing?  |

These needles I am talking about arn't on a sewing machine..they have little barbs on them.
That must be a whole other thing..I wonder if Helen knows about it??

| The needles do have barbs on them, but there are also needle felting machines that you can buy. There is also an adaptor to put on an old machine, so you can use it for needle felt. The machines, are good for felting on to clothes etc, but with the needle you can make everything imagineable really. I usually start off with an idea, but then the wool seems to take on a life of its own, so its fasinating what you end up with. Some people are brillant at making, teddies, little dogs, dragons etc. Others, make bowls and alot make bags. |

Thanks Helen, I'll be right over I will check out the web site. I'm with Jenny, I am afraid by the looks of the needles that I will start some new form of body piercing! Both wet and needle felting are on my list of things to tackle this year.

| LOl, your supposed to felt onto foam. Only prick yaself if you get distracted.Happens, but it is not as bad as bee sting..... I always keep my needles in a tin, because I am so scred of the dogs getting them. |

Julia..I haven't forgotten about the pattern or the info on felting..my copier/printer is being fussy..took me 3 days to try to print some photos out ..but am working on it..and then..we had the tummy flu last week...still draggin a little..anyway look for it soon! Check out the website I posted on Apron thread regarding apron patterns, etc. I see some Julia sewing projects!! LUB Mumsie

I am drooling with anticipation at trying this fun craft/art myself! Saw some wonderful art pieces last summer when I visited Wisconsin. Dolls, bowls, hats,scarves,a whole Navaho village scene felted and needlefelt detailed! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Slurp, just licking off the drool.
