I need to know how to embroider! I made my family cloth napkins, and I embroidered our names on them, but I have no idea if I did it right, or if I used the right stitches. Now, I need to make my mom and I money aprons for when we go to craft fairs, and I want to embroider our names and the name of our farm on the aprons. So, what stitch should I use? I used back stitches on the napkins, but I was examining a hand embroidered pillow, and it has a different stitch...I think a stem stitch, from what I can tell by searching google! I know MaryJanes book has a list of stitches, but we can't unpack our books yet, so it is unaccessable at the moment. Here are a few pictures of the napkins....I need help! I know I can do it...just don't know how! I guess I'm pretty good at teaching myself how to do things, when I have books or something, because I've taught myself how to sew, knit, and crochet....but I did have written instruction for that!

Kayla,
I think you are doing just fine. Embroidery to me is anyway you want to do it. I love the iron on transfers, there are thousands out there. I like to do samplers too. Just fill in the lines or designs. A site called "pattern bee" is fun to look at. Just type it in on google.

I think you are doing fantastic! Do you have MaryJane's Stitching Room book? There are some "how to" stitches in there also follow this link to some more MaryJane instruction on how to embroider!

Looks great!

I've found this site: http://inaminuteago.com/stitchindex.html to be useful for special stitches. I'm fairly new to embroidery myself.

Hey Kayla....I think you have done Great!!!! I just taught myself hand embroidery last year, and my only source then was the library, at the time I didn't have the internet, didn't have anyone near me that knew how, so I picked up MaryJanes Ideabook, started there, then checked out a couple of books at the library, and that was all she wrote!!!!LOL...so, I am by no means an expert, but I am stisfied with my work, and better yet, my 3 year old daughter is facsinated with it, so i can't wait to start teaching her!!!! (in about6-7 months!) Anyhow...i think you did and excellent Job!!!!....kelley

Look like you are doing a great job! I just use the backstitch all the time for outlining. Whe you are writing letters in thread, thats the only stitch I know to use. :)
I love your linen napkins.

Life should NOT be a jounrey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, latte in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming. "WOOHOO, what a ride!"

I think they look great. I have embroidered since I was about 7. (my beloved Grandma taught me, and it is my favorite craft for sure) I tend to use stem or outline stitch for lettering, but not always...depends on the project. You should be very proud of yourself...the napkins look great!

Hey, Aunt Jenny...I just looked at your blog again, and you and I had the flu at the same time. I was in bed for a whole week...sickest I'd ever been.

So, looks like I need to learn the stem stitch!

Kayla, they look great! It's fun trying out the different stitches though. You're off to a great start.
