A friend of mine has a fleece coat that has a small hole in the sleeve and I am mending it. I was thinking of felting a flower over the mended spot, but I was wondering if I can felt the flower right onto the coat or if I should do the flower and attach it! I was concerned about doing right on the coat and then having the wool shrink in the wash!

Hi Monica

Let me see if I can help. Am I understanding the coat is washable???
If it is a coat that she washes then you can not place a wool flower of it because the wool will shrink each time it is placed in the washer. I would consider using fabric in that case to make a flower and sew it onto the coat. We can use wool as patchwork additions if the garmet is not going to get put in the washer... The other way you might be able to do it is shrink the wool fabric several times before cutting the flower out. That way you have shrunk it down all the way - then cut the flower and sew it on losely. That way your friend could take it off before washing in the machine. If she washes the coat by hand then she could avoid that area altogether which would help in not messing it up.

Hope that helps - sorry for the length.

Grace, Thanks very much! That's just the answer I was looking for! I was thinking that if I did the felting on the coat and she throws it in the wash it could shrink and pull the coat fabric! Perfect answer!!
