Hello ladies, I just read Jessica's (kydeere) post on how our trees were decorated this year. Precious stories, pics and descriptions.
I had an AH HA moment while replying back. Perhaps a new Farmgirl Project could be an ornament exchange. It could go all year long or we could have Christmas in July or whatever.... We could exchange handmade, store bought or items from personal collections. I guess I envision myself making ornaments....beading, ribbons, embroidered, crosstitched, crocheted, quilted,etc... I even see getting our children involved!
What do y'all say? Any takers? Any ideas?
Blessings! Catherine
P.S. Of course, to be inclusive, other items could be made for Hanukkah....which we also celebrate!

Catherine .. that sounds great .. i think i could only do an ornament swap if we did it in .. oh maybe ... groups of about threes. don't think i could find the time to do 40 or 50 of them. on some of the forums i'm on .. we do single swaps ... or in small groups to make it more manageable. since it's hard to think about 'christmas' right now for me ... (over and gone for another year) ... what would you think of a VALENTINE ornament swap .. start making now and mail so the recipient would get it before LOVE DAY .. February 14th .. could be an ornament .. or anything that bespeaks VALENTINE ... should be 'hand-made' and value at about $5. how does that sound to ya?

This sounds good, but I am with Frannie, groups of three. I'm not sure if I could get done by Valentine's Day, but probably by St. Patrick's.

well, miz catherine .. momma of this swap suggestion .. what say you?
(i'll give you a little idea of how i've managed these in the past). the girls would send me an E-MAIL saying they would like to be part of the swap. the e-mail should include first and last name .. forum name .. and e-mail address.
(all the 'rools' would have to be set up ahead of time in a posting .. such as:
Valentine Swap .. due to your partner(s) by February 14th. (i usually liked to do the one-on-one swaps .. easier on each of us). Value ... $5. (i found it not to be fair if some girls received oppulent $30 gifts and only got a sweet but teensy little giftie in exchange). HAND-DID ... can be 'anything' within the theme ... card-art, altered book, teeny dollie, pin cushion or other sewie, small painting or hand-did wood item, etc. etc. etc. .. determined by each maker's skills, materials, interests, and imagination. Must be 'of the theme' of the swap. And a sign-up date cut-off.
Well, when the girls e-mailed me .. i used several different methods for pairing them up: i would either go 'alphabetical: Ann and Audry ... Beverly and Carol ... Donna and Dixie, etc. etc. OR .. i would pair the girls AS their e-mail's came in .. OR .. i would put all names in a basket and 'draw couples'. Then i would go into the forum and list all swap couples ... the girls would 'e-mail' each other their mailing addresses. And VOILA ... we had a fun swap!
p.s. INCLUDE ME!

OOOOOHHHHH!!! You can't see me but I am just giggling with joy! I am so grateful for all your advice....I need it, I'm still really green around here. I have just signed up for some of the other exchanges but haven't gotten started....so I don't know the "rules" yet.
After the weekend, I'll come back to this spot to get everything situated....
See y'all next year! Blessings Catherine

Ornament exchanges are such fun! Count me in if you do one.
Another fun thing we did with an online group I belong to was to exchange Christmas stockings, Easter Baskets, etc. The idea behind that was that 'Mom" is always the person who fills the stockings but who fills hers??

I think I'm ready to dive in. I'll post the guidelines here and I'll make a new post titled Seasonal and Holiday Giftie Exchange. I won't post the new thread until I get some feedback from you gals....ya' know, help me tweak it a bit. Please note my question to y'all at the end of the guildelines. So, taking all the good advice.....
Seasonal and Holiday Giftie Exchange * ongoing exchange throughout the year * handmade item valued around $5 * item can be anything relating to the current theme... Frannie said it well..."HAND-DID ... can be 'anything' within the theme ... card-art, altered book, teeny dollie, pin cushion or other sewie, small painting or hand-did wood item, etc. etc. etc. .. determined by each maker's skills, materials, interests, and imagination." * post that you want to be included * names will be matched by random "pulling from the hat" * groups will be of 3 or 1 on 1 * new theme with deadline will be announced regularly * all ladies that have replied will be included in all updated themes * names will be rematched for each theme (we'll get to know a lot of gals!!) * matched names will be notified * matched names will email each other with mailing info. * ladies will come back to this thread to tell us all about their goodies!!
Current Theme: Valentine's / Love Deadline to sign-up : Feb. 1st Match ups announced: Feb 2nd Ship dates by : Feb. 10th
Question...Is it assumed that we're working on our items even before we know who we are matched with and the item is just shipped when we get the match up -OR- Do we want an earlier deadline so we can know who we're making for?
I'll wait until tomorrow morning before I do the new post.
Thanks! Blessings! Catherine

catherine .. you are a GREAT 'swap momma'! my first thought on the 'notification of partners' is that it should perhaps be earlier .. cuz' .. if we know who our partners are .. we can be e-mailing back and forth and getting an idea of what they love .. such as: prissy or primitive ... art deco .. 50's style, etc. so we can somewhat gear our gifts to some favorite styles and shades. (AND this way .. we open our own horizons by creating things that we normally do not do). we can let our partners know a little of our loves .. without, of course, being too picky .. cuz' the maker's skills are important to know too. i think it is most successful if the 'maker' ... the GifTOR chooses 'what' to make .. and the 'makee' (receiver) can give some favorite colors. (an example: in these cabins .. for Valentine's day .. REDS go better than pinks) and you all know by now that i prefer Primitive. So .. we can make our gifts to truly 'please' the receiver .. without of course, losing sight .. that any gift received (and especially hand-did) is very special! So, it's not always "i'll make what "I" love .. but will try something different to please my reciever) all this rambling makes it sound more complicated than it is .. actually, it is a great way for us to get to know our swapping partner(s) better by e-mailing back and forth to them.
SIGN ME UP!
and, i suppose we should e-mail you separately because it is probably not a good idea to post our e-mail addresses here.
I also find it much easier to keep track of these swaps if i create a separate folder (either on the computer or in a notebook).
I'll e-mail you my info .. this will be grande fun!
P.S. i always found it very helpful if, when someone signs up for a swap .. they provide all (or most) of the following information to the swap momma:
FIRST AND LAST NAME ADDRESS PHONE (optional) E-MAIL ADDRESS
you can even list your color and style preferences in your 'momma' e-mail
example: i included the following in my e-mail to Catherine:
Style Preference: Primitive
Color Preferences: for Valentine's .... RED
I love all 'earthy' colors ... more subdued/time-worn shades of color.

Okay, question. Are we getting away from ornaments to all kinds of items? How often will we be doing this - every couple of months, every month? I want to participate but am kinda wondering how big this is going to be. Also I think as long a timeline as possible to give people time to come up with and make their item. Also what about vacations? If I am gone for two weeks, do I let you know ahead of time so that I don't have someone waiting for something from me or that I miss a deadline, would hate for that to happen. Hate to be a "downer" but just want to make sure I understand the commitment. I think it is a great idea.

anne .. i have a suggestion .. based on what has worked well in the past. we don't sign up for the year's worth of swaps ... each swap is new and those that can or want to participate in the various swaps .. do so .. and those that have to sit out a holiday or season .. that is o.k. too. this way we don't make a big year-long commitment and feel bad if we can't fulfill a few. (and since i don't do a 'year long' tree and only put antique balls on my christmas tree .. my vote would be for 'any small craft worth about $5.' And this is one of those things that is easy to find out from our swap partner and will challenge us to do something different if we know who we are swapping with ahead of time. i really like the one-on-one swaps .. cuz' then we have more time to dedicate to making something very special.
it would be fun if we all listed things that we like to 'make' and things that we love to 'receive' .. not that we should ask for 'specific things' from our swap partner ... but it is nice to know that what we give will be truly loved and put to use/decoration, etc.
here are a few little ideas:
cookie mix in a jar pin cushions needle keepers altered book wonderful mail 'art' small painting wooden blocks (spelling I LOVE YOU or something like that) hand-sewn napkins or hankie painted 'rock' .. a have a friend that paints wonderful ones! 'fairie cards' 'garden cards' beautiful hand-made valentine hand-made 'box' .. can be painted, fabric, covered with olde wallpaper (band-box) paperback book cover pot pourii or sachets soaps candles
let's hear more ideas!

Good Morning Ladies! I think I'm ready to post this as a new topic. Anne, I will announce the new themes as they come up and gals decide if they want to participate. Over the next few days I will try to come up with a list of future themes so we can be thinking ahead. Thanks for all y'all's advice on organizing this!
Blessings Catherine
