Nora got a beautiful white cast Iron daybed frame off of FreeCycle this weekend. Yesterday I got it mostly put together (I need a few more screws to put the back on) and I also was able to buy her a mattress yesterday as well! It is her first Big Girl bed! She got to pick out her own sheets and picked out this adorable pink gingham sheet set from K-Mart. She was literally bouncing up and down in excitement as I made her bed.
I invested in a vinyl zipping mattress cover since Nora is going to be potty training in the next year or so. I know that it is the nature of kids to have accidents so I figured I would keep the mattress covered for awhile yet. I must say- putting a mattress cover on a mattress (think pillow case for mattress in this case) by yourself is a whole new adventure!
Actually putting the bed together by myself was even more interesting! it has one of those really heavy iron and spring frameworks that goes between the cast iron head and foot boards. So between the weight of the spring frame and the head and foot boards- it was interesting. But I got it done all by myself by turning everything on it's back so gravity could help me!
We have some re-arranging to do in Nora's room, but it is coming together really quickly. I will take pictures when my camera comes back from Sony!

You personally may not have this problem, so I am not posting this to bring you down at all, it's only out of concern.
My mother is a dr, and strongly recommends against "big girl" beds, until after 3 years old. She says it's the number one thing she is called into the ER for. Children who have gotten out of their beds at night and gotten hurt. (unknowing to their parents that they even woke up.).
I personally knew two children who were hurt badly from this. One had a dislocated shoulder (climbed up on top of a bookcase to get grandpa's photo down!). And the other pulled on a TV cord, pulled the TV on himself, and crushed his skull.
Any way, again I'm not trying to bring down the threads, this is out of concern and love for Nora.
On that note though, I plan on getting Lela a big girl bed soon, and she is not three. My plan is, her bedroom (our bedroom, we live in a one room apt) is safe, as far as cords, and her climbing etc. She can already climb out of her crib even though I have it on it's lowest setting. What I have done to protect her more, is put up gates-IE she can not get into the kitchen or bathroom this way. Ironically even though she can climb out of bed, she can't climb the gates. I got the gates that are all one piece though, so nothing for her to entangle in to climb, unlike the bars on her crib! lol So maybe you could put up a gate on Nora's door too, just in case she gets up. And then she would be safe in her room. (as long as you have made her room real child safe/proof.).
BTW, I wanted to say, I just love Nora's name! lol I just love us farm girls who chose old fashioned farm girl names for our children. If this next child is a girl, she too will have a older name-Belle or Bell we haven't choose yet. (after my husband's grandmother-her original name was Bell, but we may add a E, Lela is after my grandmother).

Those are really good warnings Heather! Nora is such a climbing/jumping monkey that I made the choice to take her crib down around a year old because I was afraid she was going to jump and fall over the crib bar. So she has been sleeping on a crib mattress on the floor for about a year now.
Since she has full reign of her room at night, her room is ultra baby proofed- no TV's and no book cases. The only thing left that she could climb on is her changing table which will be moved to a new location soon.
At night her door is closed securely. She isn't afraid of the dark and between the thin walls of the house and the not tight fitting door- we can hear anything that goes on in her room even in our room. So she can't wander around the house at night. Most mornings she will wake up and either knock on the door to be let out or now that the light is coming back in the morning she will start playing with her blocks and singing to herself.
Last night was a good night. She slept most of the night through (which she normally sleeps all the way through). I think she woke up and was a bit disoriented, so after a diaper change, a new sippy cup of milk and a pacifier and some cuddles from me, I put her back to bed and sat on the couch. She went right back to sleep for another 4 hours!

I will have to see this new bed at our next meeting. Tell Nora that Madelynne wants to come and visit her. She is growing up so fast.

Alee, when Jenna was three and four her daddy said that she was three going on thirty and then four going on forty. Yes they do grow up fast and they think they got it down pat. I hate to burst their bubble, but that just life. What is Nora's favorite color? I was thinking of making her a special pillowcase out of flannel for her new bed. Please let me know.

Nora hasn't shown a color preference yet. Her sheets are Pink Gingham with a purple Gingham border and a yellow stripe next to the purple. She has had both pink and purple curtains so something that goes with those maybe? Thanks Madelynne! You are the best!
