I grew up poor. We mended and repaired, removed buttons and repurposed EVERYTHING we owned. I never had new anything, especially being the second daughter and 3rd child. Hand me downs and yard sale finds were as good as it got. That was what we could do at the time but I held onto forever...until now...
I was just cleaning out my closet and I finally gave myself permission to own all the clothes I do. My family always gave me grief over being "extravagant" in my clothes. When I started working at 16, I spent every last dime on a car and clothing and shoes. I do not shop at thrift, do not like the clothes,I never find anything anywho that fits just right, I like new, that is who I am.I know what stores work for my body type and that the clothes look nice on me. I will no longer apologize for it. Also, my style of clothing has always been different and no longer shall I bend to make someone else feel comfortable, because isn't it their own insecurity shining through??? I do shop with a purpose, an eye for what looks right one me and I am always searching for a bargain. I let go off what I expected of me by SOMEONE else and now live in the full grace of who I am, clothes wise!!! : )

Heather, I understand completely. I don't know that we were poor when I was growing up but seems like I never had just exactly what the other girls were wearing. If I told Momma that I wanted a particular item, we would go "window shopping", then to the fabric store to try to find something like it. I will say, nobody had one like mine. Momma was real good at putting pattern pieces together, sleeves of one, skirt of another and so on.
So, when I was working, I didn't hold back. Bought exactly what I wanted. Now that I have been retired for many years, cloths don't do a thing for me. I do wear nice jeans and tops when I go to town, but here at home, it's wear it out then throw it away. I just don't know when it is really worn out. |

I am not a clothes person at all. I have my good ole jeans, about 4 , and several t=shirts. Lots of sweaters. Only a few pairs of shoes. I love my crocks! Finally got the ones with the sock feet. I even wear jeans to church now.
I hate to shop for clothes. I get in the mood about a few times a year. I have been going to the thrift stores lately to get my t-shirts. I don't "work" so I don't have to dress up for anything. I do have a few dresses for special occassions.
I am glad you had your moment, Heather. good for you. It sure feels good to be free and to know who you are.

I find that a good sale on sweat pants and sweat shirts really is my main goal in life. I work at home and the little town I live near is tshirt and jeans country. I use to only shop at Nordstroms I use to spend so much money on clothes if I had it back I could probably retire no, or pay of my house.

Heather - I am totally with you. I have had to work to give myself permission to buy clothes new, but it makes a huge difference in how I feel about myself!! My only problem is that most new clothes don't reflect my style either. I used to wear all vintage/vintage type but what is "current" is definitely not my cup of tea. Oh well styles change. My mom buys almost all her clothes, at least work clothes, at the thrift store and I know she thinks I'm crazy for buying new. I have tried to buy all used, doesn't work for me

i can really hear what you are saying about giving yourself permission to have the clothes and not feel like you have to say sorry. i feel the same way about my opinions and beliefs. i am 55 and have listen to every one else, agreeing or disagreeing, and really heard what they had to say. now, i give my opinion, carefully but i give my opinion. and i don't have to say sorry about it - not any more. it is very freeing! as i read back it sounds like i feel strongly, i do |
