Hi Farmgirls:
I have three books for you. One is Barbara Kingsolver's book[Animal, Vegetable Miracle. She and her family move back to Appalachian farm and grow and eat their own food. She goes into why it's important to look at labels and know what you are eating. There are receipes and wit and wisdom from her kitchen table. I learned alot form her insights. A good book to read this winter waiting for the spring to arrive. If you are going to plant a garden in the spring, this book will help you carefully make choices on what you plant.
The other book is Hometown Appetites by Kelly Alexzander. This is the biography of Clemetine Paddleford. She was a Kansas farmgirl who wrote a weekly column during the 1950's and 60's, on what America was eating. It was a wonderful reading discovery.
One other book is, [u]Eat My Words by Janet Theophano. This is is the history of women's cookbooks and how through out the century they affected their lives. I enjoyed the section where women taught other women to read through their receipe writing. The author also talks about Mrs. Beetoon and her house-keeping books and how many English woomen are enjoying a revivial of her books.
I think all 3 of these books are great winter reads to get ready for spring. Get out your planting calendar and recepie cards files and fill them with homemade goodness. Happy Reading. |

I have an original 1912 copy of "Mrs. Beeton's Cookery Book." I found it at a yard sale a few years ago for about a quarter I think. It's a pretty neat old book, and I HAVE tried some of the recipes out of it -- not very good I'm afraid, since a lot of spices we use today were not available back then! But with a bit of jazzing up, they WOULD be good. The recipes are a bit tricky follow though, since they do not give "MODERN" measurements or cooking temps and times, but it's still a fun little book.
I have not heard of "Hometown Appetites" or "Eat My Words," so I will have to check those two out. Thanks for sharing! ~~~ Tracy
