Is this article true? . http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/smartspending

It makes it sound like after the middle of Feb. we won't be able to buy second hand children's items anymore, even at garage sales and ebay? Does anyone else know anything about this?

If we can't buy second hand things for our kids then How are we supposed to save money and then what are we supposed to do with all of our toys and clothes and stuff that the kids have gotten bored with or grown out of BUT still has good life still in it?

Great....Just in time for me to have my little one...good thing I've purchased up to 18 months clothes already!!!

The problem that I have with this is the clothing....kids don't EAT clothes, so if they're blended fiber, so what? I do try to always buy cotton and wool, but that's a personal preference, because I like the way natural fabrics launder, with no pilling.

I really don't buy toys or anything like that at thrift or garage sales, though, simply because I don't have the room in the house. Guess the only way to shop now would be garage sales...no WAY to regulate those!

Aren't they just talking about toys? As far as garage sales, I don't think they can stop that.

This is the same stupid law that will put me out of business - designing and making children's clothing. I can't afford to have everything tested - if the fabric is tested and determined to be safe, that should be good enough. I don't know what I'm going to do. Does any one know if there are any petitions etc. that we can sign?

This is absolutely crazy. What next? I just read some of the comments and one lady said aren't adult clothes made with the same polyester? Why just kids clothes?

There are alot of resale stores around here that are JUST for children. I guess that's all she wrote for them then. Out of business signs up all over next month.

SO they can't stop people from handing down clothes and toys, can they? Or swapping with other families and friends. Just keep doing that.

OH NO! I buy 95% of my kids clothes previously loved. Its one of the ways we save money so I can stay home with them. Besides, why buy new when -if you shop carefully- the clothes are just as good as new.

Seems to me, we've all been just fine with thrifty shopping all these years... I am deeply saddened by this and off to view and vote. What a shame..... what's next?

I saw something too on another site I am on. And this is already a law. It is jut being inforced by Feb. 10th...And there will be hefty fines. 100 the first offence, 500 the second, and 1,000 the third...And you can be shut down. So all the Goodwills and places like that cant sell childrens cloths. But, arent adults cloths made out of the same material that childrens cloths are made of??? I think this just went a little to far.

This is unreal. It must have been snuck into law under our noses.

Did they not put any thought into this law at all? They can put loopholes into laws so banker and wall street types can steal millions, but they can't figure out how to hone in a few specifics on this law to allow second hand stores to sell safe clothing? figures.

I am pretty bummed out as I still buy the girl's jeans in the kids section.

Ahh... just ANOTHER "Snow Job" paid for by OUR taxes. Funny that these kinds of things are never made public to the people BEFORE they become laws. Doesn't our Constitution say something about "FOR the People, BY the People....?" WHO exactly is making all these so called "decisions" on OUR behalf, and why don't they let US decide?

My kids are no longer little, so this won't really affect us, but I have family and friends who rely on the bargain kids clothes that they find-- not to mention that I find LOTS of adorable things for my 3yr old niece whenever I go shopping at the thrift stores myself. Since I never had a little girl of my own, I just can't resist buying her a cute outfit when I see it, and certainly not at the prices they are sold for second hand.

Like many of you said-- WHAT A WASTE!!! How can we HONESTLY call ourselves a "GREEN NATION" if we throw EVERYTHING away?!!! Terrible. Just terrible. I'm certainly going to put MY name on that petition to repeal this RIDICULOUS "Law!!!" Even is my kids AREN'T little!!! ~~~ Tracy

This is the dumbest law! It's one thing to have toys and such tested but there should have been some clause in there about used clothing.

The government is trying to do the same with with bath and body products. FDA Globilization Act which will require all bath and body product makers to pay fees, fill out forms, have products tested - essentially putting the little guy out of business. Luckily we have known about this for a while, it's not a law yet, and lots of lobbying of Congress is being done.

Yet ANOTHER reason to become more self sufficient! I have had this feeling, for the past several years now, that we were going to be forced to either rely on ourselves for sustainability, or become dependent on the Government for our every day needs. Personally, I chose the former route! We grow our own veggies and save the seeds, raise sheep, chickens, goats, cows... and ALL the hay they eat.

I will be planting fruit and nut trees as soon as I figure out the best places for them on the property and exactly WHICH trees will grow here (high water table, clay soil with Alkiline properties). Whatever happens, we are not going to starve and what I, or my husband, don't know how to make NOW, we'll certainly LEARN to do later!!! As long as we all take a stand together, our voices WILL be heard! And we CAN make a difference--- "United we stand, divided we fall" --- lets all stick TOGETHER!

This has gotten WAY out of control! I mean, the law was supposed to be here for a good reason: to protect our children, but it has gone to a totally new and horrible level!!!

I'm still hoping this isn't true? I mean really, how will I afford to clothe three little ones when I buy about 95% of their clothing at thrift shops and garage sales?
And what a waste! Where will all of these perfectly good clothes go after they are used? You would think that even if there were lead in clothing it should have been all washed out after the first few washings so isn't used clothing better than new? If this is true I seriously don't know what I will do since I can't afford all new clothing and don't want to have to afford all new...this is insane! Now we don't even have the freedom to buy what we want?! I wonder if the clothing stores are happy about this...would it be a big increase in sales for them since we can only buy new or a big hassle since they have to get everything tested? And these mom and pop companies will all go out of business.

It always seems to be about the money, someone somewhere will make a ton of money around this. In the meantime, every small business will be OUT OF BUSINESS! I have always made all my kids clothes and do the same for grandchildren. This is just the way I was raised. It was not an absolute necessity but it really helped. The rest of our clothing was thrift store mostly and was necessary. Many people depend on garage sales, thrift stores, or make their own. This will really hurt the poor. Talk about an economy killer! I am just stunned beyond words! I went to the site to vote but could not find where to do that. Any help would be appreciated. I did sign a petition and made a small donation on another site, mentioned earlier in this forum.

This is going to affect everything- including children's clothing, toys, bedding, bath products. If nothing is changed I am going to have to pull my "Baby Bath And Body Care" line from my website and I am going to have to put a label on any doll that I sell saying something like "Not intended for use by Children"- I know that the natural fiber clothes might get leniency- I hope natural fiber toys do as well.

I am so furious about these changes. This is not something that is going to have a small impact. This will have a HUGE impact all across the nation.

I mean- I want to keep the lead away from kids. That is the only logical thing to do-- but there has got to be some way that by submitting an ingredient/ supply list you can get a waiver from these laws- and I think second hand clothing should be allowed to sell.

To buck this silly law, I went last night to my favorite second hand kids store and purchased like mad.

They must know the death knell is coming--all clothing was 50% off, so a score for me, but bad for my second hand future.

When will this crazy law go into affect? I can't even believe it. I hope that it is overturned. I always count on second hand. Our landfills are going to be filled with things that are still in good condition and could be used by so many more. This is craziness and I don't see how it helps anyone.

I'm with Karen on this one. Someone, somewhere, stands to make a FORTUNE off this new "Law!" It's just like the NAIS thing ("National Animal Identification System) -- even your horse, pet goat, or pet DUCK will not be immune should THAT become an actual LAW!!! It's a system that will ONLY benefit the company making the ID chips and reading devices (and already proven a huge-- HUGE failure in Europe!) and, I'm sure, would help line "Uncle Sam's" HOLEY pockets in the process!!

"Big Brother" is already putting small dairyman and farmers out of business, trying to put a lid on the world seed banks so they can no longer sell to the public, make fishing illegal in many areas of the country (and at SEA!!).... now they are going after the CLOTHING industry??!! They want to keep us hungry AND NAKED!!! Yet another step tword --- YOU KNOW WHAT!! (Think -- "The Land of the Rising Sun!")

We all need to be praying REALLY hard for this new President AND his appointed Cabinet members and Judges. We need to pray that they will do the RIGHT thing by, and FOR, the People, and not fall under the spell of "Power Trips" and eeeeaaasy MONEY!!! (and just WHERE does that "EASY" money come from?-- the sweat, blood and tears of the overworked, and over TAXED WORKING CLASS!!!! And the IDIOTS who come up with laws like not allowing us to buy second hand childrens items!!!) So, it's time to pull up our stockings ladies and hang on! These next several years are going to be a BUMPY ride!!! hugs and blessings! ~~~ Tracy
