I mixed the starter for the sourdough bread featured in the newest MJ issue. Has anyone else?

Not yet Jeannine - still getting the hang of bread. I have a bread machine and am going to start there - I love sourdough though, let us know how it turns out.
And welcome to the forum!!

not yet. Ive got it in the Lifebook. I want to try it, but with the kiddos, I am afraid to leave something like that on the counter. Maybe when we get in the newhouse. ooh I can smell it just talking about it now.

Where is a recipe for sourdough in the MJ mag? Is there a new one already or is it the latest one? If so, what page please?

The recipe is in the Feb.-Mar. 2009 issue. I only rec'd. it Sat.

I've been saving for a bread machine.
If I can pull this off I can put that money towards something else.
I have failed at bread all of my adult life. One particular loaf even the birds wouldn't eat.

I need to learn how to make bread the old fashioned way, by hand. I've been using a bread machine for about 4 months and DH told me last night he appreciated it, but my bread really sucks!! HELP!

That's what I'm talking about. I hope this chat helps us and we can make the best bread ever. Besides the fact that I love bread, I spent almost $5. for a loaf yesterday and about $6. for a pizza crust (that's the nutritious kind, I know there's cheaper out there).
That's way too much!

Apologies to those who love their bread machines, but we gave ours away after about a year of bread that had no real flavor - making it by hand is so much better. I am experimenting with a starter for sourdough right now, and have read here that the new MJ mag. has a starter recipe, so will get that ASAP. Meanwhile, I have a recipe that makes a delicious loaf of bread. It's from The Farmhouse Cookbook by Susan Hermann Loomis.
Farmhouse White Bread
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
1 Tbsp. sugar
2 3/4 - 3 cups all purpose flour
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, room temp.
1 tsp. salt
In large bowl, dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Stir in sugar, mix well. After about 2 min. and bubbles appear, add 1 cup flour, butter, salt, mix well. Gradually add remaining flour till dough is too stiff to stir (wooden spoon). Turn dough onto lightly floured surface, knead till smooth and elastic, about 10 min. Add flour as needed, if too sticky. Not too much, dough shouldn't be too firm.
Place dough in bowl, draped w/kitchen towel, place in warm place (I set on top of dryer), let rise till doubled, about 45 min. Preheat oven to 375. Lightly oil a 9x5x3 loaf pan. Punch dough down, shape into loaf, place into prepared pan. Place in warm spot, cover loosely w/towel, let rise about 30 min. till about to top of pan. Bake until loaf sounds hollow when tapped - about 30 minutes. Remove from oven and turn onto rack immediately to cool.

Okay, that is the second mention of The Farmhouse Cookbook in two days, gonna have to get it. I just read a memoir by Susan Loomis about living and cooking in France - really good.

Ok, tonight's project will be to try this recipe. I have a KitchenAid mixer, have you ever used it to mix your bread? I know mine has dough hooks.

I use my kitchenaid dough hook for some recipes - haven't with this particular one, because it's so quick by hand, but I'll bet it would work fine.
Yes - Susan Hermann Loomis' book, On Rue Tatin is one of my favorites - I give it as gifts also. I don't know how many times I've read it, but it's a "comfort" book to me...
She also contributed to the La Madeleine (restaurant) cookbooks.

Ginny,
I typically buy Fleischmann's yeast - but at times, Red Star - my sourdough starter is bubbling nicely, so I have high hopes for it, but you never know...I am anxious to get MJ's newest magazine tomorrow, so I can try her sourdough starter if this one doesn't work out! If you are just using yeast for regular bread, as in the recipe I gave, however, I know these brands are fine...
