Well, girls as I said in another thread a couple of months ago I believe, we are expecting another baby.

The problems are though, I was going to have twins and possibly triplets but we lost all but one. One is thriving, but there is his/her dead sibling still in there with her/him.

I'm getting less then adequate medical care. As I'm also a diabetic type 1.

I haven't even seen a dr yet, and it doesn't even look like they will let me.

I have insurance but I am in HMO hell.

My regular ob retired so I had to go to the next one on the list. Well, that one doesn't want to see any one, and only wants her nurse to see patients, so I've seen the nurse many times, but she's stupid to say the least. She's said some bizzare things, and also called me a liar every time I see her. (IE I'm not a diabetic, IE I didn't get blood test done, when I did, IE I went to another dr and not her-didn't happen!)

Any way I should be at a high risk clinic but they won't write the referal. My old OB had me at the high risk clinic by week 5 of pregnancy, with Lela! And she wasn't a twin with a dead one in there!

I'm at week 12, which is very high risk for a diabetic (when things can go wrong!) and she says I need to slow down, and am wanting things to go to fast! Yeah, wanting to see a dr too soon, after I find out (through sonogram) I have a dead baby in me! This was last month that we found this out mind you! (december 12) But, I just want things done too fast. Yeah, I'm not into a slow tedious death! (my step mother is a dr but in a different state, and says I could go sepsis with this dead baby in me and no medical care!).

Any way, when ever I try to talk to this nurse about the risk I could ensue because of being a diabetic and pregnant and not seeing a doctor! She says, either one of three things, I want things to happen too fast, I am talking over her head, OR I am being negative and I should think positively! Um, negative, we are talking about REAL issues here! I mean that's like telling a woman with breast cancer, oh lets wait for treatment, you'll be fine, we can't rush things, and when she says hey I could die if something isn't done, oh don't be so negative! UHG!

I'm about ready to strangle her. I just don't know what to do in this HMO hell, but am frightened for both myself and hopefully future baby. With this care, as much as I am trying to be positive that my baby will survive common sense says I need medical care!

Any way, keep us in your thoughts.

And Alee, sorry I haven't gotten back with you about the diapers, the above is why.

Oh Heather! That is so horrible and sad for you too! That nurse really needs a reality check! Can you call and ask to speak to someone else? Can you call your HMO and get a different doctor? I am so sorry that you have been having to deal with this! *hugs*

You might want to read this site- their are phone numbers to call. I am not sure if your situation qualifies as Medical Misconduct, but you could call these people and ask.

Heather, keep us posted on what happens. I had a pathetic doctor on one of my pregnancies too. I should have been on bedrest the last few months. He refused to listen to how physical my job was at the time, until I ended up in the hospital on supervised bedrest. (NOT fun)

Now is the time to get b*tchy with the HMO, "nurse" -to anyone who will listen, including the state health people. The Insurance Commission (or the equivelent of)for your state might be resource as well.
I don't mean to offend, but I also think most medical people are pretty desensitized to their patients needs, and more worried about the bottom line-the almighty dollar.
The dead twin aside, the diabetes alone would scare the heck out of me.
I wish I had rattled cages after all was said and done with my pregnacy-from-hell. I think I wouldn't have gone so early, or had so many problems with that one if I hadn't been afraid to make a few more phone calls, or stand up for myself.

You are your own best advocate, so let them know in NO way are you happy with your care. Don't be afraid to be rude-if necessary. Be firm. Stand up for you and your baby.

In the meantime, keep going down the OB list and beg someone else for an appointment. Tell his/her nurse your circumstances, and chances are they will take you/find a way to squeeze you in so you can get your referral.
Don't let this nurses arrogance or stupidity jepordize your health, or your baby's.

Don't miss out on a blessing, just because it isn't packaged the way you expected. ~MaryJo Copeland

Oh Sweetie, I am so sorry to hear you are having such stress and being traumatized by the health care system. My daughter is a type one diabetic and I know how that complicates your life. I cannot believe you are being so badly treated by the medical community. I can't believe they are being so cavalier about your condition. Please do let us know how things are going. i will be thinking good thoughts and sending them your way.

Oh kiddo, You need to be seen.. Call the The Insurance Commission in your area. Or call the hospital and go in. They cannot refuse to see you ... even a community health clinic would help. This is risky business...

Oh my goodness. Start raising heck. Start with your insurance company, then the insurance commission, and possibly even your state's medical board. Goodness. That doc and nurse are just... well, I don't think I could type it out without getting reprimanded.

Is there any way you could get ahold of your old OB and get their take on what your next steps should be?

And I'm so sorry about your loss. I had a miscarriage way back when, but it was only one baby (so I ended up with a D&C after nothing happening for 5-6 weeks). My thoughts are with you.

Could you just go to the Health Department Clinic and get information on how to get seen? Forget going through insurance, if it means ya'll lives.

Or the emergency room? I can't imagine that they wouldn't at least send you to the hospitals neo-natal or obstetrics department with a story like that.

This is truly shocking. I've never heard of such bad medical care from a "real" doctor's office.

Don't get me started on HMO's. I think they're the pits. When I took my new job two years ago I was horrified to find out that my primary care DR was at Urgent Care - the place I went to when a bladder infection flared up on a weekend or holiday and my regular DR was closed. And my company wouldn't let me pay to get the PPO.

I would definitly call the insurance company and explain the situation and see if you can get any action from them. At least find out what other OB/GYNs you can go to in your area.

If that doesn't work try calling the hospital and see if they have a patient advocate or a diabetic councilor that you can speak to. They might be able to direct you. I'm sure the hospital would rather you not come in on an emergency basis with your condition and in your situation.

Like others have said you sometimes have to be a b!#ch about things.

In 2007 I went in for a regular eye exam with my non-HMO doctor and found out I had a fully detatched retna. He told me I needed surgery right away! or I could go blind in that eye. So off to Urgent Care I went to get back on my plan and the doctor there wouldn't even see me when she found out what was wrong. She hid in the back of the office, wouldn't even come out. So I stood in the lobby talking with the providers office to find out what I was suppose to do. They found a retinal specialist that was on my plan, but they were closing in 10 minutes so I had to come now. Needless to say I was completely freaked out and was not going to see a doctor I didn't know without running it by the guy I had been seeing for 20 years first. They wouldn't wait for me to make a phone call to my eye doctor and told me to come in on the following Tuesday because the doctor would be out until then.

I asked the bimbo "what part of fully detatched and blind and emergency did she not understand?"

I immediately called a friend who sells insurance and she told me in emergency situations you can go where ever you want, and that I should call the eye insitute at UCLA. So I did. Got the directors manager on the phone who was appalled by the situation - told me to get in my car and have someone drive me down. This was almost 5pm at this point. So I did; and almost 2 hours later we arrived with him waiting at the door; 2 doctors examined me for almost an hour; I had a tear in my left eye as well which they tacked down with out-patient lazer treatment and at 7am the next morning I was prepped for surgery. They take things seriously. They took great care of me and everything turned out fine. Except, as my sis said "what ever bar fight you were in - you lost."

The truly sad part - 2 weeks after my surgery I received a letter from my insurance company giving me authorization to make an appt with the eye doctors office that wouldn't wait for me to make a phone call.

Long story short do what's best for you and the baby even if you have to step out of bounds.

Thanks Gals.

Well, Sunday night I ended up hemmoraging, blood every where gushing out, went though several over night pads, was on my socks, all over the bed every where. I went to the ER.

They said I have a Hemmorahging Hematoma. And the ob on call said I HAD to see a dr, I could not wait. She kept telling me that. She said I had to see one on Monday or Tuesday and to call my dr first thing Monday morning. I did and she still didn't want to see me, said it would do no good. Meanwhile the er ob said they needed to see me every other day and do blood work and ultra sounds. My dr didn't want to see me till next week.

There's only one other ob on my plan, I called her got me in Yesterday. But, she's a bimbo too and said my insurance will not refer me to high risk unless my blood sugar was out of control. So basically I am punished for having good blood sugar control. I told her of the complications from diabetes in my previous pregnancy and how my blood glucose was in control then too! Didn't mean that diabetes still didn't complicate things. She only said well this is a different pregnancy.

UHG I was ready to cry and I don't cry easily!

My husband said to remain calm we would just go visit the high risk clinic.

Long story short I went to the high risk clinic with out any referrals they were appalled, and are going to work with my insurance with out a referral and get me in!

Yay, Heather! Finally people who make sense and understand what you're going through. So sorry you have to deal with all this. It's certainly not a way to keep the stress down during your pregnancy. I'll be praying for you here and will keep checking in.

Me too!

I am so happy, the high risk clinic said I never have to go back to those clowns again. In fact, even after this baby is born I can keep going there. I am so relieved to never have to see the nuts again!

Heather,
Make sure you are documenting this and turn them in! If they are treating you this badly, they are treating others badly.

Also I bled on and off with my daughter. According to the sweetheart of a Doc I had in the hospital, he said you seem like you are bleeding a lot, but it isn't as much as you think.

So don't fret too much as long as you and baby are doing well otherwise. Just take it easy, and get as much rest as you possibly can. And if the doc says you are bedrest, that means it. Otherwise it is supervised bedrest in the hospital and that is NO fun!

Good for you Heather. Glad you got to someone competent.

Isn't it interesting how the good doctors just make everything work for the benefit of you regardless of what the insurance company says.

Thanks gals not any new updates, just bedrest.

However, I know I've been told that about not a lot of blood either. BUT, I took every thing in a plastic bag with me to the ER, they gasped in shock, and were even a little shocked about how much I was still bleeding there. It was on every thing, all over. Down my legs, on my socks, all over their bed, sheets, etc.

No news is good news, right?

My heart dropped a little when I saw the word hemmorage, but I'm glad you got into the high risk clinic that you needed/wanted. Healthy vibes your way for you and the babe.
