I really don't enjoy the holidays. I guess if comes from not having a family to share with, other than Scott and Charlie, which is plenty but I try really hard to make traditions for us BUT I try to have family and fun all year around. I don't enjoy making the meals, the clean up, the decorating- I am not a grinch or scrooge, just I prefer to remember loving and giving all year around. Does that make sense? I dread November- December and hurrily try to get through them. With Charlie now, I do try to explain the real meanings of the holidays, take him to see lights and Santa and make a batch of cookies, but otherwise, I could do without. I am a very upbeat, happy person, so this may all sound strange.

I only had my Elvis to share the holidays with. BUT I got invited by church friends, yay. And New Years was just Elvis and me. NOT my fave way of spending the days, but just line you, no family etc.
I enjoyed it none the less. But I know where you are coming from girlfriend. I am glad too the days are over and we're back to normal :)
And indeed, making your own memories and spending it the way YOU feel is right is wonderful. Traditions are sometimes to be broken and made again, with your own little family.
And it IS not all about presents and all the bla bla surrounding it. It IS about Jesus :)

I think the older I get the less I want to do all the decorating and baking and all the hooplah stuff, too. It's just too much work anymore. But the grandkids have to have a tree, at least. So I know what you mean, Heather. It is becoming more about the true meaning and less about the show. I, too, am so glad it's OVER!

Yes, I HATE the onslaught of shopping and pushy people that happens right after Thanksgiving. It gets down right rude and I don't even like to go out with Charlie, for fear of being pushed out of the way. I find good deals on toys and things and that helps with Charlie but otherwise, I shop year around for what we need. January/Feb/March are my big buy times. I do enjoy some aspects, like the tree and a simple wreath on the door but the other chaos, I can do without.
And FYI, ALL Y'ALL are my family, so thank you for understanding!! (((HUGS))) : )

Thank you for posting this. I have felt the same way, and as each year passes, I decorate a little less and less. For me, it isn't about the presents. It is about the food.  Just teasing.
I think the whole reason for the season has long been forgotten. Like Dutchy said, it is about Jesus.

I hear you Heather, you're far from alone.
I think we're just so exposed to Christmas earlier and earlier each year (note the Christmas decorations with the Halloween stuff) in the stores and on television that by the time the holiday comes most people have had it. Our consumer society has forgotten the real meaning of Christmas in lieu of buying more stuff. Having stuff is fine but when charities are suffering b/c people don't have extra to donate there's something wrong.
I'd love to see more emphasis on the true meaning of Christmas in the media instead of what we see now. Ok getting off of my soap box :)

aw yeah I understand. I ignored the media/tv :-p and did my own thing and did as much for everyone as I could. I must say I played mrs. claus numerous times and anonymously:) It made this one more special. I'm actually a closet easter fan more than christmas. It sounds so weird sometimes but easter means the most to me. Just always has and I love spring and the pretty pastel colors and new animals being born and jesus rising. :) But shhh that's a hidden secret most don't know about me xo

Well finally someone who understands
I do bake and shop for the Holidays
I try to remember the "Real Reason"
My health isn't very good anymore
All the baking and the cleaning;
cleaning of which I didn't do much; because we are building our retiement home on our small farm
The house here is always a mess.
I use to be a happy person
Not so happy now; but I guess that is just me.
So,
I am glad they are all over and a new year
A new slate.

| bridget....you're so sweet with your hugs! i think that maybe the "unrest' of the USA and the poor economy, etc., has a lot to do with people's attitudes toward holidays. this year, we had fun, i did a lot of baking (which always puts me in the spirit!), decorated, etc., but when lauren came to stay and visit (my step-daughter who is 28) and she was telling us about so many of her friends who have lost their jobs, it brought a bit of harsh reality in to this magical christmas time. anyway, however anyone feels, it's okay....there is no right or wrong way to go about the holidays. enjoy however you want to! |

| The best thing that ever happened to my Christmas is when we all stopped exchanging presents. That took off so much pressure that now I can really enjoy the holiday and choose to do the things that are fun and meaningful. Also it has stopped becoming a financial burden. The economy this year may have taught that to other people also, out of necessity. The best thing that could happen to bring Christmas back to what it's all about...God's gift to us! |

I would have to agree...Christmas used to be such a fun, thrilling time! What happened? I guess I grew up and got a real job. I work in the food industry so once Thanksgiving rolls around I know I have a ton of work ahead. It all starts with our Thanksgiving day buffet, then I have to construct a huge gingerbread town by December 1st. After that its parties or working in the restaurant ever night!
Once Christmas rolls around, I end up going to my parents house only to make dinner and brunch for the whole gang there! This year I assigned job to my brothers who called me a Nazi! huh! I still had to bark at the boys for not doing their "jobs" correctly. Maybe thats where the Nazi thing came from! hahaha!
I feel like I have no time to enjoy the Christmas season. I would love to just gaze at my tree or go to a fun Christmas party or drive around at night and look at the lights. I don't want to be tired, busy and rushed for the whole month of December.
When I have my own family, I want to have nice relaxing Christmases where we play Monopoly and drink hot chocolate with marshmallows by the Christmas tree.
