So the Dh has almost ( with persistant nagging) completed the henhouse.. My question is for 5 hens & rooster how mbig a pen area do i need attatched to the house. They will be let out in the morning & free range but when we are away I want them caged in..We have a 8 ft fence around the back yard area where the henhouse is, and also am concerned about other birds Do I put chicken wire on top of the caged in area as well? like on three sides with one side being the henhouse?

My five hens have a 12'x16' pen attached to their hen house. I lay straw down on the ground for them to forage through while they are inside. Usually when I am home, they are out and about in the yard. The top of the pen is covered in plastic poultry fencing to prevent invaders. It seems to be big enough for them to each have their own space if desired. I also have a ladder leaning up against the side of the pen for a roost and an umbrella over their feeder. It seems to be working just fine.
Good luck with your girls!!

Dh & I finished the work on the house for today, we hung the door, window and shelving for their nests. I have an old kiva ladder for them to climb on in there too.. Now we are looking to build the yard. We were thinking we want to be abe to clean it out so it will have to be tall enough to get into right? The house is 8' tall and 4 ft wide & 8 ftlong. We are waiting to hear from their "chicken nanny as to when we can bring them to their new home.

8' tall is good. That way they can fly around a little, too, and you won't have to bend over.

Well, you're almost a chickie mamma! Not much longer now. They will be very happy there, I'm sure.

They better be.. I will be out there making sure they are eating well and "behaving". (We might be getting "a rooster ") & waiting for them to lay laying those precious eggs!

Hi Cheryl,

I learned the hard way that the top is not just to keep the chickens in but to also keep "not-so-nice" critters out. I lost some chickens to hawks! A cover was more to protect my flock than to keep them contained. So I would consider what is around that might see your babies as "fast food"! I am hoping to also get some chickens in the spring and will have a cover to keep all the neighbor cats out! Also be sure nothing can dig under the fence. Coyotes are good for that one!

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. That's what I was considering too.. I am getting young hens this first go around, not babies but I agree we have hawks and Coyotes. I see the neighbors chickens free ranging down the road but I have fears...They will be in ann enclosed house at night.

Our Girls are free range during the day but about sundown, we shut them up. We have a bigger problem with opposums and coons than hawks. We have went out at dark:30 and found coons in the hen house. They seem to know when the door is not shut.

Yeah! I can't wait to hear about the girls tomorrow. How exiting for you. I am getting anxious now for some more.

I stopped by my friends earlier today and her husband asked me if I wanted some farm fresh eggs. Of course, without thinking, I said yes and he said, well get ya some layin' hens then. I could have slapped him.

Congrats! They look so neat in their new home. I am so jealous, I can hardly wait to get mine. I need to get the coop fixed up first and should probably wait until the snow is gone! I'm thinking about getting some chicks from the local hatchery, just haven't decide what type I want to get yet. I might also wait until after Easter. It's amazing how many "Easter" presents end up at the animal shelter because little chicks grew up and the kids no longer want them.
