I may already know the answer to this but I was wondering if someone could clarify the different types of crochet hooks out there. I pick them up at yard sales etc and have a mixed bag. Here is a picture of the four different kinds I have. I get confused as to the sizes because they appear to use the same # system but are obviously different. And what is the little "hook" at the end of one of the metal ones? Is there a good "rule of thumb" when buying/using the hooks?

The orangy one looks a lot like the ones I use as well, they appear to be the metric size. I always use this chart for the change in Metric to US sizes and back again http://www.knitting-crochet.com/found/conchafou.html
About the little hook on the other one, maybe that is for traveling? This is whayt I found online :) "Double-ended or Travel Hooks. Double-ended Hooks, not to be confused with double-hook needles, have a different size hook on each end. They got their second name because they reduce the number of crochet hooks necessary to carry when traveling."
Hope this helps :)

I dont know about the one with the two ended hooks, but I know that the other three you have there are just different brands and sizes of regular old crochet hooks. For the most part all hooks are the same. You can get them in aluminum (Which is what I use) or plastic or wood. (I would think that wood ones would pick the yarn, but maybe not.:O) Great finds! hugs

Okay, so the size is the same regardless of what the hook is made of. A #7 steel is the same as a #7 plastic or alluminum? I guess you just choose what material would be appropriate with the fiber you are using right? Metal with acrylic or wood with natural, like knitting. Here is a close-up of the "extra" hook, I'm thinking it is more than a traveling hook with another end.

steel hook = thread crochet for laces and fine work aluminum, wood, bamboo and plastic are for yarn
number seven steel is very much differnt than number seven for yarn
the really big plastic ones are for speed crocheting where you hold 3, 4 or more strands of yarn at once and crochet
that metal thing is just to attach it to your work the last loop made so you don't loose it ( old hook) keeps you from pulling out your stitches while work is not in use also saves loosing your hook
a double ended hook which I don't see you having is used for a type of work where you keep all the loops on the hook like knitting but worked differently.
hope that helps
have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe Farmgirl Sister #115 my bloghttp://sunshinescreations.vintagethreads.com/ my web store vintage threadshttp://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=79144 |
