In the Dec-Jan issue of MJF on p. 99 ( the page about MJ's 4th of July Farm Fair) at the bottom is a picture of lace with buttons. What type of lace is that? What is that technique called? Tatting? I have 10s of thousands of old buttons I would love to learn how to make this beautiful lace. Any info you might have is appreciated!
Thanks
Merry Christmas
Becky

Becky, It is tatting! I will look through my stuff and see if I don't have an extra tatting book! Here is a website that also carries tatting supplies or check at your local craft store! http://www.be-stitchedstore.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=9&cat=Tatting+Books

Thank you for taking the time. I have always loved handmade lace. I know how to make bobbin lace. I need to learn this. I figure to add buttons is more advanced but I want to work up to it. I tend to tense up when I crochet or knit and my stitches get really tight. Is this something I will have to worry about with tatting. I hope someday to be able to knit and relax like normal people. Is there any special supplies I need? Or just a needle and thread and a book?
Any more info would be awesome!
Thank You
Merry Christmas

Tatting is so much fun! I just learned how to do it a few weeks ago and it is not hard at all once you get the hang of the sequence. I used MaryJane's Stitching Room book as a guide, but another great book is Handy Hands Learn Needle Tatting. I only know how to needle tat and I don't know how to use a shuttle to tat, but want to learn. Good luck with tatting!

Becky, You use a tatting needle, which is a long needle with a blunt end or tatting shuttle and cotton crochet thread! It's easier to start with the size 10 thread because it's larger and easier to see! Once you get used to it you can use finer thread if you want! I have done pieces with 2 strands of sewing thread!

Thank you ladies! After New Years I will get what I need and take a crack at it. It helps so much to get little tips from people that have tried it and learned little tricks to make it easier. I knew about using a needle but I never heard of a shuttle until I checked out the website you posted Monica. Thanks I saw some books that looked helpful. I think I will get MJ's book first. DH would kill me if I brought out another craft right now. I am making cinnamon ornaments, painting a plaque for a friend's nursery, cross stitch ornaments, making Christmas cards, sewing presents, making hair bows, making cookies and candies , and baking dog biscuits for Christmas presents. Lots going on here. I think I will collapse after Christmas and need a slow craft to do.
Merry Christmas

I just got my MJ books ( all 3) can't put them down. I have got nothing done since they came. I started crocheting and tatting. I stink at crocheting but tatting I am getting the hang of. I got about 4 inches done so far. It looks better as it goes along. I can't wait to make the button necklace. I find I can tat and relax while crocheting and knitting I tense up. Thanks again for your help.
