Okay.. dream come true starting in March--- I am going to build a cabin of my own on some property...Its on the olympic peninsula so it has to have walls. Im thinkin 10x12...with a small back porch for a cooler a table and shelf for my camp stove. A small front porch for a tub...of course. The inside to have just enough room for a bed and a couple chairs with maybe a pot bellied stove....I want the front and back to open and the sides to have a windows..Thats it...and I want to build it for myself...I have not done this before, but I am motivated. Thanks to all you motvating farm girls. I want to do this out of salvage....

Any ideas? Any hints? Any free plans?
Let me know.

What a great thing to do! Try talking to lumber yards about their "end cuts" or "rough sawn lumber". We have had many of them give us the wood.

Craigs list is great! We have recieved a LOT of freebies from their.

Best of luck

ask them for "cull" lumber. It's the not so perfect stuff. We built an entire barn 24x42 for barely $3000, and that includes the new metal roof. Used all cull lumber and rought cut oak.

Become a member of Freecycle in your area, freecycle.org There are chapters in many cities even mine of a population of 5,000.

The premise is for people to post things the are looking to get rid of, or people can post request for things they need. It's all in an attempt to keep things out of our landfills.

Good luck...sounds like something my husband and I would do...and still might.

Saw an article last week about Tumbleweed Tiny Homes. They are less than 500sqft (I think). The inside was very clever in its set-up. You might get some good ideas from their website.

Tanya,
check around for old log cabins,,,,one of our farm neighbors has bought 2 old log cabins for under $300 each, (they were going to be torn down...he just happen to spot them on one of his Music Ministries traveles.
He (Doug) and his brother dismantled the cabin, numbering each log on the logs as well as on a cabin/graph drawing thingamajiggy....had the logs delivered to his property & he & his brother re-assembled the cabin according to the numbers. He put new improved Chenking tween the logs and he put in new double pained windows. He built the foundation as well as the decking around the cabin from cast-off construction materials. I have a little pic of the inside on my blog, his wife is singing in the picture. Oh, and they put in a Ben Frankin' type wood burning stove and it heats that little cabin up wonderfully. It has a loft, which is were the "bed/guest room" is . It has a Futon sofa/bed so can be used either way.
Anyways, just thought I'd share this with you. Have fun building your special little cabin.
