I would love to see a book done that involves acid free/ tomatoe free recipes. I have IC ( intercystial cystitus) sorry I have no clue how to spell it but I cant eat or drink anything acidic or my bladder flares up which causes extreme pain and sometimes bleeding. I have to stay away from:

Orange juice, tomatoes, fruitty drinks, almost all fruits, vinigar, lemon juice, tomatoe juice.. anything pretty much high in acid. It really sucks too but cause I love pizza with tomatoes and tomatoe sauce on it but I have to avoid it. In order for me to deal with it I have to think Ok that will cause me pain.

I have not found any recipe books like this at all...It is tough to avoid these foods , you have no idea! All of the yummy things I love! * Sigh* I have to make chili without tomatoes. sounds gross but I have to use alot of other ingredients instead.

Kim,
I would love to know if you do find books on this. I have IC also and it canbe killer when those high acid things can't be helped but put into things. You really aren't kidding when you say its hard to stay away from them. My hardest are tomatoes or tomatoe sauce and the fruit drinks.
There is a really great recipe for lentil chili I found without the tomato sauce. Its not that bad :)
Hope you find what you are looking for!

Ok. Got my curiosity up... can you add an alkali-base or something to the recipe to cancel out the acid?? My daughter has dairy allergy pretty bad and I know IT is a pain just dealing with that!

There is a web-zine that I subscribe to called Living Without. The recipes are really good. You can look at the website at http://www.livingwithout.com

Check them out... =)

Its nice to find someone else who has IC cause it sucks! I have searched the internet and cant find anything. Maybe I should creat my own IC cook book? It is really hard to stay away from tomatoes but I have no choice. I know as soon as I eat it I will be in pain. my hardest is like yours. Can you feel the pain right away? cause I can, I can feel the pain in my bladder like right away. I wonder how many women in this world have it and dont know it? or just have it period? I believe my sister have it too...this is too long - I am going to email you..Hugs kim

Thanks for the site. to be honest I have no idea if you can add alkali-base and to be honest I dont know what that means. I have heard to add sugar but no way am I going to do that! tried it and no way does that help! just makes it worse!

Kim and Jessie - get the book Healthy Healing by Linda Page. She has big page with info that will help you with other therapies (and some diet helps, too) for your condition. The book also has lots of good info on bunches of other health issues, too.

Blessings in your search, and Merry Christmas!

I wish I could help. My grandmother would take home grown canned tomatoes and make tomato soup......she always added a little baking soda.....she said it took the acid out?

I'd be interested in recipes too. I was recently diagnosed with GERD, hiatus hernia, and Barrett's Esophagus with high grade dysplasia. I was told to limit foods high in acid as well. My doctor prescribed omeprazole (Prilosec), 80 mg per day. One thing they told me was to sleep with my upper body elevated. They said I could sleep with blocks under the headboard or a 'wedge' pillow. This is supposed to keep acids from going up into the esophagus. This might help you all too. I have another endoscopy coming up in February. They are going to see if I will need surgery for the high grade dysplasia. I didn't even know I had acid reflux, I hardly ever had heart burn that I knew of. But they told me that from the extent of the Barrett's in the esophagus that I must have had the reflux for a decade or better.

ooh Ann thanks for the book name. im going to look into it. definitly be worth th help.:)

Lainey,
What they told you to do is about the exact same they told me for a stomach ulcer: keeping elevated, taking prilosec or zantac. i dont like sleeping on the wedge thing so i ignored that. i found that dairy helps counter act it sometimes, not always, but it can be helpeful. I had an attack of IC that landed me in the ER one time after I had eaten pizza and then i found out about the tummy ulcer.
its nice to have someone going through the same things, even though it stinks that i know someone else has to be plagued by it...blek!!hugs!

kim,
ive been checking in on your blog. You are doing a great job girl, Keep up the great work! hugs!
