OK, show of hands....be honest..... how many of you do this????????
"Tip#310" "Brassieres are easy to iron. Iron toward the center of each cup, turning the brassiere on the board until each area is smooth and dry. Then iron the flat sections and the straps."
I was laughing so hard I could bareley type this tip!!! Honest to gosh this is a tip I found in a little 1948 booklet called "1003 Household Hints & Work Savers."
I don't ever remember my mom doing this....but I do remember the term... "Torpedo Bra".... yikes! did I just 'age' myself??? >^..^<

If I tried that?? There's so little fabric I'd end up with burned fingers and a scorched undergarment!
What a find |

I'll have to ask my friend. She told me recently she irons her husbands underwear. I iron as little as possible - that's my confession for the day.

Ironing bra's?? Never ever in my whole life did I do this, nor WOULD I ever do this, lol. Neither do i iron underwear. To be honest, I hardly iron at all. There is so little to iron, so I just fold it, run my hands over it and it looks good.
My grandmama used to sit on sheets, once folded, lol. She told me that was a great way to iron those sheets, yay. Good for grandmama #9829;

can you imagine having nothing better to do than that!!?! although if you think about it, many of us want to go back to a "simpler life".....but i still don't think of having a "simpler life" meaning that it would create "high lights of our life" such as ironing our bras or "baking cakes that husbands love". funny!! |

I love those old books that have all the tips for housewives. I think my mom had every one of them. I know she ironed sheets. I'm going to ask about the bras, though. I bet she did. But not me. I only iron my hubby's church clothes.

I love reading those old books, my favorite are the etiquette books. If you really want a good laugh, read the cookbooks or sewing machine manuels.....you get the feeling that the general feeling was women in general just weren't the sharpest cheese on the cracker. Guess we showed them, lol

Yep - I have a couple, the "Woman's Modern Home Almanac" from 1956, and "The Art of Homemaking" from 1962 - this was a present from a mom to her daughter, with a note from 1969 - glad my mom didn't get me something similar, although I wouldn't put it past my grandma Amy Grace

A friend of mine irons--EVERYTHING!! I just couldn't imagine. I don't even know where my iron is--as a matter of fact it is my daughters iron and when she moved out she left it here. Nothing wrinkles anymore. Oh I take that back. I would iron a tablecloth--if it needs it. As for ironing bras one must remember back in those days Bras were made out of wrinkly cotton and they were huge even if you weren't. MB

oooh no!! lol. I can honestly say **raising my hand** I have never ironed a bra. I will wet it with water to get the wrinkles out and then wait to get dressed for a little bit til it dries. ;) The pointy bras were definitly before my time, not that I would have had much torpedo anyways.lol hugs

This thread is just too too funny!! And -- honest -- my sister in law told me one time wayy back in the day, that Why Yes, She ironed everything her dear husband wore. Even his handkechiefs (an' I can't even spell the name of the things right...) -- I was hugely pregnant at the time, standing in our mobile home w/no airconditioning in the middle of summer in Arkansas -- You think I wanted to even Think about an iron?? LOL!!

Of Course Katmom - I iron my bras right after I iron my unddies. I do them on Tuesday just like my teatowel says to.
OMG - this reminds me of a great little book I found at the library used book sale. It's from the later 1800's, about how to be the perfect housekeeping. It has some of the most hysterical recommendations. |

My Mother used to tell a story about my lovely Aunt Yuki. When she and my uncle first moved back to the states with their children (late 50's), my Aunt ironed everything, even their underware! My Mom stopped by during ironing time and, observing the underware thing, told her, "Omigosh no! We don't do that here in the states" and folded all the undies for her and put them away. Aunt Yuki was astonished at how fast the laundry got done after that. Go Mom!

Hahahahahaah! I can not stop laughing,,,, I have to agree with you ladies, A. not much fabric on mine so I don't need to iron it... B. if I want to "get the chill off-just toss it in the dryer, better yet just warm it with the (hair)blow dryer. C. iron??? is that one of those things that gets hot & scorches ones clothing?
