Please pray for my sister, Janice (the sister who lives in CA). She is undergoing surgery this morning to remove two very large ovarian cysts. The cysts are roughly the size of a deck of playing cards each, one on each side.

This is very difficult for our whole family - our mom passed away from cancer almost 6 years ago, and the wait for the answer on the biopsy of these beasties is going to be harder than the wait to hear she made it out ok. It is even more difficult because she lives so far away.

Just received the following email (and a phone call) from my other sister, Nancy:
Hi all,

I just heard from Aaron (Janice's boyfriend)via text message and he said everything went great! They were able to get all the cysts (and only the cysts) laprascopically. Aaron also said she is already awake, but he hasn't had a chance to see her yet. He will be updating me again after he sees her.

I'm so relieved!

Nancy

Me, too!

Ann, I'll be praying for Janice that the surgery goes well, the biopsy is negative, and also for you during this stressful time.

Oh fun...I don't have any biological sisters..just a couple of boys with cooties. But I love em anyway.
Hang in there Ann...read your blog and know you're having a rough time and it doesn't help to not get sleep. Hopefully there's a nap in your near future.

**UPDATE #2**
Sister Nancy talked to Janice on the phone very very late last night (time diff between Chicago and San Fran area). Here is what was in my inbox this morning...

Hi all,

I just got off the phone with Janice. It is great to be able to talk to her. Janice is staying at the hospital over night tonight and it looks like she'll be able to go home tomorrow afternoon. They kept her because she is in quite a bit of pain still and is throwing up from the anesthesia. They switched her pain meds to Vicadin and said as the anesthesia wears off she'll be feeling much better. She'll be sent home taking Vicadin and prescription strength Ibuprofen. She can drive as soon as she's off the Vicadin and feels up to it.

Ovrall, her Dr was very pleased with how the surgery went. They found very few adhesions (spider webs) which made the surgeons job much easier. They were able to drain the cysts and then removed them and only had to remove less than 1% of each ovary (great news!). The liquid from the cysts is to be biopsied and Janice said the Dr didn't mention it tonight so she thinks they don't have results yet, however she did make a left-handed note to herself to remember to ask about it tomorrow. She was assuming the results are benign, but will double check regardless.

She is hoping to get a decent night's rest and is looking forwward to sleeping in her own bed. Her friend Kathleen will be there in the morning and will be the one taking her home.
She is going to update me again in the morning once she talks to the Dr(s) again.

Thanks for all the thoughts...sounds like the hard part is over:)

Another update...
Janice was kept at the hospital overnight on Wednesday night because she had extreme nausea and vomiting from the anesthetic. She came home late yesterday afternoon, but was still vomiting overnight last night until late this afternoon. Her caretakers were going to try to get a little solid food in her to maybe remind her stomach that food goes down and not up and try to get things moving again. If no success, they were going to call the Dr. to try to get a better anti-nausea medication.

Latest News: After switching to 1/2 prescription Advil and 1/2 Vicodin the nausea seems to have subsided. The prescription nausea mediction has been stopped - possibly mixing with the Vicodin may have actually made the nausea worse (go figure). Anyway, she was able to eat some cooked buckwheat cereal for lunch and was able to keep it down, and is starting to feel a bit better. My sister Nancy talked to her on the phone and said that Janice sounds a lot better, too. Hopefully, we've turned the corner!

Email from sister Nancy this morning:
Hi all,

I feel I need to get more creative with the subjects of these emails...anyways. I (and Janice) wanted to give you another update. Janice is still in the hospital (Aaron took her to the ER on Saturday night) and is having quite a rough time. She basically can not hold down any of her food/drink and basically her systems below her stomach aren't working the way they should. They did a CAT scan last night to rule out any blockages and that came back perfectly clear (YEAH!). They also did more blood work and found out that her white blood count is going up so that's good news as well. They've decided to basically stop all food and drink (and rely on the IV) to see if they can get the systems to start working again. They're thinking because she went with out food for so long that for some reason her systems are rejecting it.

As of late last night, she is still resting comfortably (aside from some throwing up). They have her on some good pain meds, some anti-nausea meds and an anti-inflammatory all to keep her comfotable as well as to keep the healing process going for her surgey area, She is very comfortable so that's all we can hope for her at this point. There really isn't any word on when she might come home. They need her systems working well, and at this point she's pretty "drugged" with pain meds so the hospital is the best place for her.

Keep the good thoughts headed her way! I'll send another update as soon as there's any other news.

Nancy

Another update as of late last night (remember we are 2 hours ahead of California time):

Because of the trouble she has been having, the doctors decided to run a CT scan to be sure something else wasn't screwed up. they found no intestinal blockages (which is what they thought they'd find), but did find some liquid in her stomach. They believe that there is a) just enough liquid to keep her from being hungry, and b)because she is lying down (go figure) the liquid may be triggering her gag reflex. Anyway, they have decided to basically pump her stomach to see if that stops the nausea and also stimulates her hunger to get things moving in the right direction again. It looks like she will still be in the hospital for at least a few more days. So much for day surgery and "you'll probably be back at work in a week"!

Thank you all for your prayers! Keep'em coming!

Ok, after trying to understand what's going on, I broke down and called the hospital this morning...

She still has the tube in. They will be doing Xrays later today to try to see what's going on. She is on an anti-biotic because she has had a fever (which is going down now) and her white count was elevated. They have had to change the anti-biotic. She was resting when I called, although the nurse told me she's not getting much rest because there is so much they need to do all the time. I asked her what they plan on doing next, and she said she couldn't say until the dr comes in later today to evaluate the situation.

Anyway, that's the official update straight from the nurse's mouth.

Janice was just taken back into surgery to remove a blockage in her small intestine. According to the doctor, this is rare but not unheard of. We have already alerted everyone out there to tell the surgeon of her reaction to the anesthetic so that they can be ready with the anti-nausea meds asap after the surgery. As soon as I hear more, I will post. Thank you all so much for your prayers and support.
