I was wondering what everyone was doing to make their home look more "farmgirlish"?
Here are some of my ideas:)
I have my tv, vcr, etc in an amoire cabinet.
My Furniture has vintage white chenille(sp?) bedspeads that is used as slipcovers.
I have patchwork pillows on said furniture.
Old plates on my wall in a group setting.
Soooo, what is everyone else doing? LOL

Hmmmm....I'm so behind in doing anything with my house its not exactly farmgirlish or anything else right now!
I love the idea of the hanging plates. I plan on making some tied scrap quilts this winter if I can sit long enough to do it ( just had back surgery 3 weeks ago ) for guest beds.

I have a white "bedspread" on my sofa as a slipcover too.
I have a few plates on my wall, but need to change those to more seasonal ones.
Need to make some pillow covers to match my chair, which I refurnished myself.
NOT sure if that all is "farm-girlish" but I like it :)

My log home is always farmgirlish because during the winter there is always a baby goat in the house - during the summer their is tons of hand dyed fiber and yarn drying thru out the house and all year around the door is always open to those who need it...

My house is farmgirlish. I love decorating with barb wire!!! I have it around the top of my bathroom, I have little cowboy boots holding stuff, I use an old grain scoop for a utensil holder, that is a few things anyways!

My style is rustic elegant. At least that is what I call it. I have new and antique pieces mixed together. My dining chairs are in a French style cherry wood with black leather and nail heads. I Love the colors of fall so thay are throughout my family/dining/ kitchen. I have baskets all over the house. I have 2 old school desks on a ledge above my pantry and an antique high chair and baby ducky rocker. My hubby is all cowboy so mixed in with some of my elegant stuff is his western art. We collect pieces with Herefords in it. I have a dish rack on the wall with odds and ends of old kitchen items on it. I have whatnot jars full of interesting old things like dice, fountain pens, mini teacups, crystal bottle stoppers, powder compacts, tiny old toys, pretty baubles. My bathroom has enamelware accessories like tissue holder and soap dish. I haven't got my wainscotting put up in there. The nursery is done in vintage baby. The play room is in cowboy motif.
This if farmgirl chic to me... I am a farmgirl and I think it is chic:)

I love reading this thread -- what wonderful ideas -- and imagining your homes.
I'm slowly but surely decorating our house, but my situation is a bit different. Since I went from a very large house with no discernable style  to a very small cottage, I have the joy of starting with a blank slate. The only thing (I refuse to call it a problem) is that my blank slate is very small.
Many of the things I'd love to do aren't doable, plus our budge is incredibly tight. So I'm doing a bit at a time.
In all honesty, the size issue is one I'm trying not to be discourged over. I always dreamed of an old farmhouse, but that wasn't in the cards, so I'm limited in what I can do. But I'll admit that sometimes I read a post here or see a picture somewhere and I begin to turn green with envy -- not attractive in any way. I'm working on that, though.
Enough about me. Someone else please post to this great thread!!

This is a fun thread! Let's see- I have an old Jelly cupboard and another tin cupboard in my kitchen that hold my canned goods and other stuff. I too have downsized( continuously since 2001) and now have a bitsy house with no storage, so I keep bringing home baskets and trunks and things from thrift stores to put stuff in and stack. My movies and books are in baskets- and spilling out onto the floor, too. We can't get cable out here, or any decent tv much, so we watch a lot of movies. I made the valances in my kitchen out of vintage barkcloth and then I sewed old buttons to them, too. I have a collection of crocheted potholders around- some on the walls, some in a basket hanging from the wall. I cant leave behind an old kitchen utensil, so I have lots in jelly jars in the windowsill. I have a great wicker chicken breadbasket on top of my jelly cabinet. My computer sets on top of an old treadle sewing machine cabinet, and many of the other tables in my house hold old sewing machines (can't stand an orphan sewing machine!) None of my stuff cost much, if anything, and is the result of hanging out in thrift stores for years, and then once someone knows you collect say potholders or old sewing machines or wood handled kitchen stuff then pretty soon you end up with all kinds of little gifted treasures from your friends grage sales adventures! I particularly love my jelly cabinet, and that came from my sister in laws last move...it belonged to my husbands grandmother once, and it was just hanging out in her basement. I just love that.

Patti, my house is small too! Big enough for me and Elvis, but small. Still I like to decorate and re-decorate often, lol. I just did some re-arranging again day before last! I have put my sofa more at an angle now, and my coffeetable and chair as well, so it looks bigger, but is not! And now I need to start looking on where to put my tree! It is a big one, but fake. SO maybe I will just put the 2 top parts in the stand thing (forgot name) and see if that looks good. Then I can probably put it on my sideboard or on a little table next to my couch. Will post pics when I am done :)

I love using old things as decoration around the house. I have an antique dining table and buffet that came out of the Catholic nuns house in my town. My mother-in-law gave them to us. She paid $50 about 30 years ago. I like using the old crocks around the house. I keep bath towels in one in the bathroom. I also have my first pair of cowboy boots that are about 40 years old now and each of my kids first pair of boots on a shelf. I also have an old school desk as an end table, and an old trunk as a coffee table. I have a few barbwire baskets around the house. One of them is filled with rusty jungle bells of all sizes. Right now decorating the mud room are several pairs of muck boot on the floor. We got cold and snow here in the middle of Montana.

I agree-- this is an awesome thread! It is giving me some great ideas for decorating once I get moved into the new house. (I am a basket-a-holic too so those are all over my home no matter how I decorate)

Yeah - lots of good ideas!! I want a jelly cupboard too - I have a huge kitchen but not much in it, just around the edges - you could square dance in the middle almost, at least two people could. I think an old farm kitchen table would be perfect in the middle, now I just need the $, hmmm. The rest of our decorating scheme could be called "early hand-me-down", nothing cohesive but it works okay.:D

I guess my house is farmgirlish since there is usually a peacock or peahen staring in the window. A goat banging his head on the deck, and a cat purring next to the keyboard while I type this on the computer. The wood burning stove we found in a newspaper add over 20 years ago is fired up while it snows outside and 2 little dogs toast themselves in front of it. My daughter just took a warm bath in our deep and extra long claw leg bathtub I found at a thrift store and had refinished when we built our house. She says when she has a house the one thing she has to have is a bathtub like ours. Hopefully I will find another one by then. The egg gathering basket in the mud room also adds to the farmgirl decorum :) I guess what makes our house seem farmgirlish is living by the old saying "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without". I've also found that when I go through those phases of simplifying my life and getting rid of things it is much easier to part with things I didn't spend a fortune on. This is a great thread and I love all the ideas. I think I found new uses for a few things. Thanks farmgirls.

| I guess my house says farmgirl in huge letters!!A cat on every cupboard and window sill, baby chicks in the bedroom, sick rabbits in the sewing room,all our tables and furniture are either homemade or made over.John Deere pictures are framed along with chicken catalog covers. every bit of wall space in the hall is covered with hooks for hats and coats. I use my grandmothers appleware dishes, my great grandmothers library table and mom's apron everyday. goats are often wandering in and around the house, Our Christmas tree was once decorated with tiny farm toys and animals, but have since been removed by the kittens and are decorating the living room floor now.The tree itself travels from room to room with the help of three little dogs. I love my life here on the farm!!!We bought our property 40 years ago when we first married, and had to live in the city for 35 of those years until our dream could happen. I wouldnt trade my farmgirl life for the spic and span city life for anything! |

I love country and farmlife.. I have a big window in my kitchen with a windowseat. I placed my herb pots on the seat along with my fruit basket and a country crock. I have a few pottery pitchers on the window ledge and above the window I hung a piece of stained dowel the length of the window, hung S hooks on it and hang my baskets from that it makes an open window apeal with baskets as the valance. Sunshines through and its warm & cozy. I also hung my Chicken plates next to the window and a faux feathered stuff rooster roosting on an old Chicken crate. I put a small table in the kitchen now and covered it with a cute tablecloth with a ruffle have coordinating/matching cloth napkins are placed at two placesettings. We eat breakfast here. I have two chicken tin pictures and wooden chickens on my diningroom wall..around an oblong dark wood framed mirror. We have an antique oak clawfoot table & 6 chairs in the diningroom too. My "Country Roses" china is displayed in the built in oak/glass cabinet. Yeah Lots of chickens & baskets .. I love them. Quilted throw on couches with bright floral red/gold striped pillows. Waiting to put Old Barn Pictures on two huge walls when I get enough taken from the area & framed. Its definately cozy & inviting.. Shouts welcome Home...

Cheryl- I just noticed you have country roses china. I too have the Royal Doulton Old Country Roses china! Unfortunately mine sits in boxes until I use it because I don't have a china cabinet or a dining room.

This is a GREAT thread...so many good ideas here! I also think of a farmhouse as simple and functional so my farmhouse (farmcottage really) is lightly furnished with things we actually use. I had all my upper cabinets in my kitchen made with glass inserts because I think the things we use everyday are beautiful and decorative. I like old furniture or new furniture that looks old because it can take the abuse of my kids and pets and it just enhances the 'patina'. I'm finally overcoming my 'colorfobia' and painting my house bold, rich colors and I think that gives the place a warm feeling that I always associate with country living.

Oh Lorraine,
Your story of farmgirl decor cracked me up. Farmgirls have so much in common. Our christmas tree is heavily decorated on top and all the lower ornaments lay on the floor since we adopted a tiny kitten who was dumped in the road a few months ago. I have had a rabbit with a broken leg in my sewing room and bottle fed baby goats, who are always born on the coldest night of the year, in front of my woodstove. I love the way your tree travels from room to room. Aren't we fortunate to have all our little animal friends help us decorate our homes.
I need to be brave like Celeste and use bold colors to paint my house inside. I have always used white, or do they call it eggshell? Hmmm... I wonder why a farmgirl would chose eggshell paint. :)

We built with Habitat for Humanity 8 years ago- It doesn't seem that long ago. The Dr I worked with at that time, said I would be much happier if we would have put a "old" farmhouse on my lot- honestly that would make me VERY happy! I have a very small home- love grows there!! I decorate on a very tight budget- I go to auctions, estate sales, thrift stores and rummage. My tv sets on my mother's old tredle sewing machine- she won as a 4-h prize, I like to decorate with old crocks, white ironstone, anything farmish and mainly from the depression era. One of my most prized possesions is a arial view of my grandparents farm from 1937. I had the frame made out of old barn boards and it is the first thing you see when you come into my home. My 11year old daughter gave me a Christmas apron for a gift a couple years ago- she found it at a rummage sale, it hangs over some old wash boards at this time of the year! Makes us both so happy- she was so proud when she found it. We go hunting for treasures all the time- I know too soon she won't want to go with me any more- she is growing up too darn fast!
This is very fun seeing and picturing how others decorate- great ideas!!

| Wow! I want to come see your houses. Sounds like we do a lot of the same things. In my kitchen, I have a country hutch with old (but use them) glass stuff. On top of the hutch is my Grandma's coffee grinder with wood box, my Daddy's old black dinner bucket, and Mom's butter churn. I have lots of crocks, all sizes. Our sm bedroom is all American Indian. Paintings and stuff we have collected. The Living room wasn't supposed to be what ever it is. The Dining table, piano and tables are oak. Trying to go for the ranch look. have a steer hide on the floor, an antique rifle hanging from the fireplace mantel. More Am Indian art on the walls. We have Ole Ron's grandmother's library table for telephone and magazines and 2 china cabinets full of old glass goodies. The master bed is decorated with quilts and 2 sm antique sewing rockers, one with my 60+ year old doll sitting on it. The master bath is decorated with garden tools and watering cans. The only thing country here in the office/craft room is the dirt. |

I will try to figure out how to post a picture. But I'll try to explain it also- I have about 6 different sized old washboards on the wall and I took my special Christmas apron and just hung it over the corner of the washboard- I think it turned out cute, I have other aprons hanging on a couple of others- but my Christmas apron from my daughter holds the most precious spot!

I have lots of hooked rugs old and new. My house is a 1870s New Englander. I like the style, its much plainer than the painted Victorians in town. We have a partially milk painted farm table for the dining room with old oil lamps on hooked mats; windsor chairs with a distressed look for seating. I love everything old old old! |

This is a fun thread. Oh my lets see..I have two old hutches..or hooser cabinets.. love them both and use them! I have a collection of kerosene lamps not sure how many? and have used them too. I love antiques and have a couple nice pieces a pretty shelf thing to display my little pretties.. and a amoire,andcouple small antique tables, old rocking chair actually two of them one is a big over sized fabric rocking chair my granny and gramps had. Love crocheted doilies and embroderied scarfs have them all over the place on tables and such. Have old family milk strainers on the wall and 'Old reds' cow bell (she was the family cow who lived to be in her mid 30's) I like cows in my kitchen so have all sorts of stuff cow related. Got the old butter churn sitting on the old hutch. Also have some old milk bottles and a quilt on the couch and another quilt folded up on a chair. Baskets here and there. My favorite tea cups hanging on the kitchen wall on one of those peg things - grab one
in the morning right now for my morning cup of hot chocolate.
Have a ceramic pot I threw years ago that my wooden spoons are in for cooking. I use my old treddle sewing machine cabinet for a table right now. Thats pretty much it I think? when I can find a place to move with some land will really fix my house in farmgirl style better than this one.. I have curtains I got at a yard sale I am aching to hang in the right place and cute wooden shelves to find a good place for. I love yard sales and thrift stores you can find some real treasures there! I want to hang storm doors like the old screen doors, Love those. when I can find a place will get my floor loom back up and running again! and get back to quilting and learning to spin just got a spinning wheel not long ago. |
