See pg 2 for even MORE ideas!!! ...and of course a picture!

As a commited recycler I am always looking for a way to reuse something that still has life-in some form.
If you're like me, your kitchen hot pads are grungy after only a few uses. It seems such a waste to toss them out- but equally as offensive is the appearance of being dirty- even fresh out of the wash!
Today I had a brainstorm!
Rather than start from scratch on new hot pads I simply recovered my old ugly ones!!!
Seriously- all I did was pick out a few scraps of fabric , turned it right sides together and stitched up the raw edges- an envelope cover!TWO seams and voila!
*It needs to fit snugly to be safe*
BEFORE you stitch up your old ones be sure that any thin worn out spots are mended and padded.

This set of 3 took me a total of 15 minutes!!!

What a clever idea! Great job! I am going to copy cat this as needed!

I would suggest using only natural material fabrics (cotton, wool etc) as I know that the synthetics burn/scorch easily.

I'm so glad ya'll found it appealing- after I posted this topic I remembered that sometimes I go a bit far to "recover" something that really has no life left in it!!!

Autumn, recycle til nothing is left!! How green is that?! Hey, when I saw this I also thought about some of the ugly Betty ones I've seen in the dollar stores..recover those babies for pennies and have designer pot holders.

This has so many possibilities- I don't have time to list them!!!
I confess- I originally thought-Hmmmm. I could keep a few covers in the drawer and pop em on when company is over- that way I wont mess up the pretty covers.
I have since repented and decided that this is such a quick easy fix that I can stand to use up the pretty ones too-and enjoy them for myself.
I already have plans to do some pretty ones with felted wool.

Cute Autumn. I still swear by the suede ones. Great insulaters, no scorch or burn and they wash and dry just fine. The suede would wsork covered with a cute print that matches the kitchen too. As far as synthetics, which I stay away from anyway...they melt. Try getting that off your hands or anything else. Like dropping hot syrup for making candy on your fingers...it sticks and keeps on burning.

I love the seasonal fabric! What a great idea. You could even ad a bit of velcro on the inside of the new cover and make seasonal/interchangeable covers! (i guess as long as the velcro would hold up)
They are really pretty. I love the festive pumpkins the best!

What a great idea... Just keep in mind that some synthetic fabrics will melt when exposed to heat. Or burst into flames.

Fix it up, Wear it out, Use it up or do without!! This is a saying a former pastor of mine always said and every time I go to throw something away I always say that first! If its worn out and beyond fixing...then it can go!! Thanks for one more way to conserve and be responsible for the things we've been given!

That's kinda my philosophy- but I am really bad about thinking there is still life in something when truly it is time to throw it away!
Show us some pictures if you gals re-do your hot pads- I'd love tosee them!
I am going to work on some wool ones today I think.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Autumn, you are so clever. What a fantastic idea!
Thanks so much for sharing. I believe I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and do it also. I might put a pocket on one side to make a sort of mitten. I hate those bulky pot holder mittens that you can't feel anything you are picking up in.

OK here's the next idea!

I crochet dishcloths for my kitchen and I LOVe them!!!
After a few months the lighter colored ones start looking really dingy

So I decided these all COTTON thick cloths just couldn't be tossed to the trash can yet- even if they do look bad!
So- I stacked and basted them together, using scrap cotton from the fabric stash, on the top and bottom.

Then I made the envelope cover, just like the others-

Finally after fitting the cloths inside the cover I machine quilted the design using a walking foot on my machine.
The quilting keeps them from shifting and moving and I think it looks great!!!
**REMEMBER- use natural fibers* wool,cotton- preferrably from sources of re-use.Old coats, jeans etc.

Awesome! I am going to have to start doing the wash cloth one. I have some my great grandma gave to me and I just don't want to throw them away. So I will have to do that!
Thanks for the creative ideas!
