In our large family history, We have special "family recipes".. When we enjoy these meals (mostly holiday.)We have fond memories of those no longer with us, Don't you think that makes them even more special?

Cheryl, not only recipes but the dish it was served in. I have 3 bowls that I only use on Thanksgiving. One is a pink depression glass that Grandma used to served cranberries. Another a green depression glass that she used to serve Waldorf Salad and a cassarole with a fancy holder for the sweet potatoes. Funny, they were not called depression glass back in the 40's and 50's. They were just bowls.

Not only the recipes, but the memories themselves. Thanksgiving was always my Grams favorite holiday. She would always strap an apron on me and set me to work. I always felt important in her kitchen. She always had a "special" job that only I could do. Ever since I was a little girl I stood by her side. Then when I was an adult she came to my house to cook Thanksgiving. What an honor to have her with me. Brings tears to my eyes to think that this is our 2nd Thanksgiving with out her.

Our most memorable Thanksgiving is one that she laughed the hardest about. My "special" job was to stir the mushroom gravy that year. She stirred up the corn starch to thicken it. I kept stirring and stirring and it wasn't getting any thicker. She just said, the heck with it and put it on the table. Food was getting cold. Imagine our surprise when we tasted sweet gravy! She had grabbed the box of powdered sugar instead of corn starch.

We still laugh about it to this day.

There are definitely certain things in our family that always make the table. One is the green jello salad with cottage cheese, pineapple and a bit of horseradish - noone really likes it but we always have to have it. Another is sour cream raisin pie - it was my grandma's specialty but she is past her pie-baking years so the torch has passed to me.
We have new ones too, it is neat to add traditions.
