A few months ago, someone said they made "scrapkins". I was wondering if they just finished the edge of cotton material or if they used two pieces of fabric and turned them inside out or just how were they made? Anyone remember? Thanks!

I don't know about scrapkins but I have made napkins from fabric scrapes. I cut them 18" square and hemmed all four sides. They are nice to mix the prints and set the table in a colorful way. |

I love to make cloth napkins from my extras too...I don't have a collection of matching napkins..mine are all very very unmatched...but I love them. We DO have one set of I think about 12 Christmas napkins for holiday dinners. Since we always have at least 20 here for Christmas dinner I should make another set I guess. It is more fun to make the mismatched ones. I hem the 4 sides (usually by hand..but I like to hand sew) on mine..and usually do 20" squares.

This is actually kind of funny that you brought this subject up. It was just this passed week that I took count of my scraps and made them into napkins. Of course, some material made 4 napkins, some of it only made one, but now, I have a whole nice little pile. I just cut out 12 1/2" squares folded under 1/4" on all sides and zigzag stitched it in place. I added rick rack to a couple, lace to another, and ribbon to two. They turned out real nice. :)(The brighter more playful colors I made a little smaller napkins for the children. HUGS

Thanks ladies! I think I will grab some scraps and make some this week. Aunt Jenny - I love the idea of making some Christmas napkins. My mom and sister would really like those too.

One year..years ago...my sis in law made napkin and placemat sets for each family...in colors that matched our kitchens at the time (this was at least 20 years ago) and they were sure well received. I have thought about maybe doing that for one family this year..we will see.

I use a single layer of fabric and serge the edges with a rolled hem but I have just hemmed them on the SM as well. If using a print, the backside of the fabric won't be as "nice" but if using solid colors, you can't tell the difference between the 2 sides other than the hem being there. Jami in WA

I remember making napkins with my mother when I was a child. If it was sort of heavy cotton we would machine stitch a line around about a half inch from the edge and then pull the threads to make a fringe. Of course if it was a thinner faabric, we'd just hand sew a hem. I love making napkins- unlike quilts I actually finish them!
