Hi sisters,
I have the "old lady falls down" home alarm.
It has a big button on a machine, a wrist watch style button or necklace style, and also a little button that hooks like a pager....
I get embarrased when someone mentions it and asks what it is. I don't want to appear paranoid or even tell them why I have it. People I barely know can be too nosy, I think.
BEFORE I got it I REALLY needed one a couple times.
I want encouragement to keep with it....help me stay out of denial that I am too young/too proud to have it.
Twice before getting this Alarm system I was suddenly totally blind at home. I found a phone...I could walk tho off balance...and couldn't see the phone...I think I was passing out too....yuk....I have to remember this. ..finally I was able to dial numbers by feeling and guessing what I was touching on the phone. and got a friend come over....the house was unlocked and I had my baby behind her gate in her bedroom and asleep.
That has been a few years and now I have vertigo...only stagger a little and lean on the wall at most but walk with a cane outside the house and walk slow. I am 58 years old now and my baby was a foster child.
I have heard that young women use one for calling police or 911 if in danger at home, the people who answer the alarm already have your information on their file right with them. I have called the police, 911 a few times. Alarm machine that has a real live person answer with one push of the button and they call ambulance, police or even the friend/relative you have on file.
 The real live person answers within one minute.
I've tested mine today and put the little button back on my watch.
yep, It's my pride and fear of really needing one that bothers me.

Linda- Vertigo can happen to anyone at any age. I applaud you for having the call button. If you needed help and couldn't get to the phone I would hate to think of the suffering you could go through just because you didn't want to wear the button.
My neighbor has one that is the pendant on the necklace style. Her's is very subtle and looks like and ivory decoration if you didn't know what it is (It is long and oval shaped). I was thinking, if you have a discrete necklace type, you could have someone who beads make it into a fancy necklace that is pretty. Perhaps that would make you feel a little better about wearing it?

I wish the system worked in our area FIL and MIL could use one and we would love to have them have one.But no luck I live alone 7 miles from town with no neighbors for miles I wouldn't mind having one also. Im 54 and don't have Veritgo keep it treasure it and use when you need it.

I would like to make it pretty somehow...and wear it as pendant...or bracelet. This is not pretty but looks like a machine's button...
Years ago I put a little Native American medicine bag around it and hung around my neck...maybe I'll do that again.
This topic is a good one for ideas to hide or beautify the buttons. The hardest part is to remember to have it on!!

Ok. I'll put my 2 cents worth in.... You can fall in love with the "beauty" of it, or the BEAUTY of it. I think it is so amazing that someone can push a button, which triggers an alarm, then another alarm, and then one suddenly finds helpful people at the door. I don't have a button, but I respond to them with the Fire Department. I am a firm believer of their importance!!! You can dress it up however you want, but in the end, use it if you need it so someone can be there for you!!!!

Yes, it is a good thing to have. You need to keep it with you. I think it's great. My little friend who's 91 is finally starting to wear hers. It's the long white one that clips on to your clothes. She hates it but I think she's realizing she needs it after her fall last week. She fell close to her bed near the phone, so she called 911. But next time she may not be near a phone.
If you need it, use it. I would.

absolutely keep it! can a little crocheted bag be made for it..since you mentioned a Native American medicine type bag before..perhaps you could "dress it up" a little by having a crocheted bag and necklace crocheted to hold it.but yes..definitely keep it.

that's a good idea....switch from bracelet addition to crochet/knitted bag on necklace. I'll be working on that...at least I can make sure it's ok in my mind to keep it and to wear the button...

KEEP IT!!!!! Yes, was a little loud there but it is a lifesaver in emergencies. MIL got one after she fell and could not get to the phone and layed their in pain for too long.
Forget the fact of what it looks like, remember it is your safety net and when you need it, it is there.
I like the beaded and crocheted bags. Here was my take on it, string some pretty beads on your yarn and crochet away. Then your bag will have pretties already crocheted into it.....

Linda,
We all have different things we need help with even though some may not be obvious. Many people have made their fortune coming up with an idea to help themselves and then marketing it for others who may have the same need. If you come up with a solution to make you feel better about your button maybe you could share it with others and even make a little money someday. Hope you feel well and don't need it but I'm so glad there is something out there to help you if you do.
