Ya'll were right. It was mostly back charges from the meter not working right. Darn and drats and all that. I am so upset. I was so ready to fight. I did tell them they need to put a warning label on bills like that so people won't have heart attacks when they open them. She didn't think that was all that funny. Oh well.
It sure did hurt writing out that check. It was actually $386.20. Might as well have been $1000.00. Not much difference.
I told them I was not going to run my heat. I'd just freeze, it's just me here most of the time anyway.I'll just wear extra clothes and pile on extra blankets at night. It didn't work. They don't care, it's not their problem.

Hey Kris! I had a $480 electric bill and it just keeps piling up. My boyfriend works from home and during the summer he likes to keep it at 72...I informed him if I was paying the bills it was going to stay at 78 and he could turn the fan on...I about cried. I got the next on in and it too was outragous. I can't believe the price of turning on appliances. I now know where my father came from with turn off the light if you are not in the room. Do you think I am made of money. I'm going to charge you to leave the light on. I'm considering buying candles but the cats will knock them over...shucks.... Anyways know you are not alone! Nope. And now they think my little house is not reading right. My DD lived there awhile but got married(!!!!!) and moved out!!!!! So we have everything turned off except the fridge and the bill this last month was only like $13.00. So when I was there today (sulking, I might add) she said they had put a new meter on that house, too. Just because they think the bill isn't high, they think it's not working. HMMM.
And Laurie, ouch! I keep mine in the summer at 75 and in winter 67. He needs to pay the bill.

I just don't think that's fair.
They should have to notify you, rather than just sending you an outrageous bill. And how do you know if the meter is working properly or not? You just have to take their word for it.
Reminds me of the propane company that provides propane where I work. They just "noticed" that they haven't charged tank rent for a couple of years. So, all of a sudden there is a huge bill for past due tank rent, though we had never been billed for it before.

I have a year round bill of my electric it is call budget billing. I use very little in the summer but the price in the winter is outrageous this way I pay the same thing every month they adjust it some times but not more that $10. One big thing I did was the lights I use the most I put the screw in fluorescent light It droped my bill big time.

It has been my experience that most electric companies will "budget bill" after you have lived at the residence one full year. We did that in Arizona as we had to run a/c June-Oct and the heat was on for Nov-Feb. Our bill averaged $125 and our home was 1900sg ft. only 2 of us living there. We did BBQ through out the whole year which helped too. And ran the dishwasher only when it was full if we had company.. We did not have a clothes line so the dryer ran a bit more often.

Dinah, Those fluorescent lights make that much of a difference? Hmmm..... I will surely have to start replacing my lights with those then. Thanks for the tip.

When I was at the electric co. yesterday, they had a meter with a 120w regular bulb and one of the swirly new kinds. When I turned on the 120w bulb, the wheel just flew around and the other one went really slow. So I believe there is a big difference in the usage between the 2 bulbs. I was amazed to see it.
And I think they only hook you up on the budget billing once a year, so you have to know when they do it.
But hopefully next months bill will not be like this last one.
