You know the ones that you buy in a can that you put on green bean casserole? I have a bumper crop of onions in my storeroom and just purchased a can for Thanksgiving green bean casserole only to find it was made in Holland and packed in the USA--I have more people coming for T-day than I thought and need some more but I don't want to purchase these across the ocean fried onions. I see the ingredients read "onions, vegetable oil (palm and others), wheat and salt". Do you think they just toss the onions in the wheat flour and salt mixture and fry up?

Yes, but they probably have a deep fat fryer. I make them at work all the time...just toss the onions in saltd flour (rice flour is the best but any kind will do) and fry in deep 350 degree oil. Then take them out an put on a paper towel and sprinkle with more salt!

Jami, thanks for reminding me. I have a recipe for the famous greenbean casserole but using all fresh ingredients. I had never eaten it until last T-day and my granddaughter brought the dish. It was the worst thing I had ever eaten. But then, I don't do store bought greenbeans or canned soup. The onions taste good but not healthy and too pricy.
Good luck with your onions. You can do them a few days ahead just in case they don't work out. And let us know how they do. |

Thanks Hana! Belle, I only use fresh or organic frozen green beans and our fair pig bacon and our homegrown onions. I don't put in the condensed soup or anything, just au naturale. I love it but I don't really care for the "standard" recipe either. I guess I should have specified this is my brand of green bean casserole. Jami in WA

Ewwww!!!! DH and I both hate the green bean casserole! It was ALWAYS my mother's favorite and she'd cook it whenever she could. I tried it once and swore I'd never eat it again. Ick, ick and double ick!
Just give me regular green beans, why put soup on them?

my grandmother loves the stuff too. So much so that she makes it almost weekly with her roast beef dinner. The only things I like added to my greenbeans that can somewhat constitute a "casserole" are beans sauted with a little olive oil and garlic, then tossed with some prosciutto (or crisp bacon) and topped with freshly fried thin sliced onions before serving. No icky cream-based binding agent.
